Introduction: All my portraits and caricatures are drawn by hand. They are not done with any computer "tricks". The portraits are drawn on archival paper in pastel. The caricatures are drawn by hand and color is added on a computer in Adobe Illustrator. There are several things, depending on the project. If it is an illustration, I enjoy trying to grasp the client's vision, what they are trying to convey to the viewer, and capture that for them. If it is a portrait, although I am limited to the information provided by the photo, I look for something in the photo (or preferably photos) that shows something of the person's individuality. Of course nailing the likeness is the first priority, but beyond that, it is always satisfying for both myself and the client if I can capture something more. If the project is a Caricature, well, that's just plain fun. Probably one of the most enjoyable things I do is live caricature at a party, wedding reception or other event. Interacting directly with people in a situation where everyone is there to have a good time is hard to beat.

Mike has designed artwork for me related to the Breast Cancer Awareness products I sell. He has created nice designs that my customers like. I've worked with him on multiple projects and find him to be easy to work with and very professional.

Mike did an absolutely fantastic job at our wedding rehearsal cookout. A lot of family and friends came from out of town, and we wanted to do something special for all of them. We had a cookout with activities: music, volleyball, horseshoes. But the highlight of the evening (besides the gift giving and sharing of friends and family) was Mike's drawings (caricatures) for the guests. Everyone lined up to get their portrait done. He was worth every penny, and I would have him back in a heartbeat. He was par excellent, and the guests had something to take home with them. And I see these portraits on refrigerators and walls of family and friends. Thanks, Mike.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Absolutely! I am always looking online for tips and tutorials and have recently been looking into some courses on illustrating in Photoshop, which I have used before, but would like to learn a lot more about it.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I am currently working on a number of illustrations for a client who is writing a type of fantasy book series. It is really stretching me in many ways, so I think I am growing as an artist through this project. Also, the client is a new author, pretty unfamiliar with many of the processes involved in publishing a book. This is my first book illustration project too, so we are both learning as we go and from each other. The client had a couple of not-so-great experiences with artists before he hired me, but has been very pleased with my work so far. I will be starting a third illustration for the book soon and he has asked me to take on a couple of other areas related to the book, one of which is his web site. So far this has been one of the most rewarding commissions I have ever been engaged in.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Hiring an artist is a bit like looking for someone to date. The first attraction is most likely visual. You like what you see in the artist's work. Next is compatibility. Is this person someone who respects your vision and you? Does this artist "get" your project? Are they someone you can trust with perhaps sensitive, non-disclosure type information, such as a story line or ad campaign? And finally, as the project progresses, will they be someone you would like to hire again?
