I'm licensed by State of Kansas in secondary mathematics and physics.

I've taught high school mathematics (algebra, trig, pre-calculus) and college statistics.

I make sure you know what you are doing, based upon things you already know. Tutoring is a dialogue. I don't do your work for you.

Thanks so much Dan for your help with my college business stats class! The way you broke down all the different formulas we were working with into real life examples really helped me understand the material in a different way than just seeing numbers on a peice of paper.

Question and answer

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Usually, I've seen "math tutors" help people learn formulas, or go through the motions correctly. I could do that if I had to, but that is probably why you need my assistance, because that is the way the material is being taught and why you've learned it poorly so far. If a tutor can't help you see and understand the material more deeply, they may help you pass the next test, but you won't really learn anything.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I listen. I try to understand where a person is coming from. For me mathematics and statistics are both fun and interesting. You can do mathematics just for the fun of it (if you like that sort of thing, like some people enjoy crossword puzzles or Sudoku). The real benefit though is it helps you learn how to think logically and systematically. Also, many occupations depend on the critical thinking skills that are developed through mathematical training.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I do a couple different jobs. The main thing I like about all of them is when I can help someone else out. Working as a IT practice consultant I help people improve complex work relationships and processes. Teaching gets me closely involved with mathematics while helping others who want or need to know how to do it (think it). Tutoring enables me to help individuals who feel they need dedicated assistance.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I'm currently enrolled in a course on teaching mathematics at KU Edwards. It is interesting to study the way mathematics teaching is changing so it can be better than the way it has been for generations (which if you are not naturally inclined to it like me, may have been as tedious and disappointing as I found Comm Arts ("English" back in my day) and History classes--both things I've only learned to like after I got out of college.
