Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. When looking to start lessons it is important to find the right teacher. Be cautious of ones saying they are a master of many styles and/or offer low rates. Mostly you get what you pay for, so do a little research about teachers in the area before getting in lessons.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Every teacher is different and in this field you should always find one that suits your needs. For example somebody who wants to learn Rock wouldnt want to be with a teacher who mainly teaches Jazz. Also look at how much they teach and ask for references. Just because someone is a great player might not mean they are a good teacher.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Years of experience?
Why they like teaching?
Whats included in lessons?
When is payment due?
Cancellation and make up policy?

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Most guitar players think because they can play that they can teach. Being an instructor is much more than that. You need to be able to relate to the students. I always put myself in the shoes of my students to see where they are coming from and to help relate what we are working on. Most teachers will just show you something, assume you understand, then move on. I always make sure you understand the material and can apply it. Lessons always go at the pace of each student. There is no rush in any lesson.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I started teaching in college just to make extra money, but after a few other jobs I always came back to it. I love watching students progress into great musicians. Its always different and no student is exactly the same. Ive always enjoyed teaching not only guitar but music in general.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Teaching is by far the best type of continuing education. Its my favorite part about it. There is always something more to learn in music. Every good teacher also still has teachers they go to periodically. I have two from college and one from private lessons.
