I have taken every class from Jeff and been on a few excursions and have gone from taking hundreds of snapshots hoping for a few keepers, to taking a handful of photographs and most will be keepers. You will not find many people with as much experience in film development, digital, Photoshop, printing, scanning, business, teaching, studio, modeling, product photography, macro, and a tour guide through Kansas. Jeff can even make a drive through western Kansas a wonderful experience and you will come back with stories to pass on.

I have attended Jeff's photography class as well as a couple of workshops. I was a complete novice with my little point and shoot camera. Jeff insisted the camera didn't matter, it was all about trusting yourself to take it off "auto" and learn to really take pictures. The material was presented in a format easy for me to understand with lots of one on one instruction (and with a sense of humor!) He convinced me I was smarter than my camera, and the proof is in the photos. When people look at my photos and tell me I missed my calling and should have been a photographer... well that's a testimony to Jeff!

Question and answer

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. My approach to teaching photography is different from most because I address the issue of Exposure first, since it is the most important element in photography. Teaching composition varies for each individual and requires that the student involve themself in the appropriate specialized workshops which follow every basic photography class or workshop that I offer. In addition, I offer one-on-one tutoring to help students master areas that are of the most interest to them as an individual.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. Teaching photography in the digital age requires that I learn more about photography and the emerging market each and every day. By maintaining a position with the largest remaining professional photo lab in Wichita, KS I get constant input from customers and vendors alike that helps me stay in touch with the ever-changing digital Photography Market.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. I offer a class on the Business of Photography and have written a book on the topic to help would-be photographers get a grip on the realities of being self-employed and competing for every dime they earn. My Business seminar is a great tool for determining for yourself if you have what it takes to be in business and survive. All of this is essential learning before you concern yourself with the finer aspects of the art of photography. DON'T run out to buy a bunch of professional photography equipment thinking that it will make you get better photos and will earn you any business.
