Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Wedding photography, Wedding videography, Photography and Commercial Design gigs.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Make sure they are a degreed professional with ample years experience. Make sure they have ample reviews. I would make sure not to hire a hobbiest but someone who does this full time. There are many "Uncle Bob's" out there who think having a fancy camera means they are a photographer. Also stay away from big chain companies. They will hire your photographer last min and most likely find them on CraigsList the week before the wedding. I'd also recommend to check out for hidden fee's, how many photos you get with your package and if you get a disk of images or do you have to buy a 5K album in order to get your disk of images. This happens all the time. Stay with local photographers and make sure you see LOTs of their images in a library not just 12 that dazzle you on a slide show. Those might have been the only photos they took that season which were good?
:)

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Look, look, look. Make sure you see ample images from a wedding not just a few. Make sure you meet with your photographer or videographer and see if they click with you. This will be the person who is with you during your most intimate moments. Make sure you like them and their work before you book. Also make sure it is their work, not their 2nd shooters or someone else's work that they are showing you.

Look at their reviews. We have ample reviews on weddingwire.com.

I'd also ask them how long they have been in business for, how many weddings they have shot. You might be surprised that they have only been shooting professionally for 2 years and just graduated from college. You want a seasoned professional by your side who really knows how the camera works and can shoot with various conditions. There are many hobbiests out there. Make sure you get someone who has a fine art degree and studied photography as their major. This is soooo important. You need to know how to compose a photograph not just take one. This is what separates the artists from the amateurs. They need to have some hours in the Art History course room and some experience shooting professionally. Many photographers apply to my studio who themselves are good. However I am not looking for good, I'm looking for amazing drop dead, tear jerking photographs. If its your wedding you might want that too.

Also on another note: don't hire any photographers who are all about themselves. I have seen this go wrong many of a wedding where a photographer was all about themselves and not their clients. They got in the faces of the bride and groom during the ceremony, didn't know to shoot with a long lens to get those shots and were literally in the way the entire wedding. I wish I could report the photographers which I have seen do this, but they are out there and they make it their business to be in yours during the wedding. I believe that you should leave your ego at the door, its your wedding and it should be enjoyed. The best compliment I get from my clients are that they never see me or my shoot crew at the wedding. We are silent and very well mannered. Its your day and we would never want to be the center of attention. Then when my clients see the 1,500-3,000 photos on the website we took of their wedding they are amazed.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Try to have a wedding date set in stone. Maybe also the venue. I normally get reserved a year before any wedding and get booked up very fast on common dates. I also have other photographers who shoot for me whom are at the same level and experience level if I get booked on a date I can always choose one of them for your date too. I come on a 1st come 1st serve basis.
Its only fair that way. Once you know your date then you should be looking for your photo + video. The best book up fast and might not be available if you don't hustle.

I do also take last min bookings but that is depending on my availability or if we have any photographers free that weekend. If you look at it this way there are only 4 Sat in every month, for approx 7 months (wedding season), that equals to about 34 days available to shoot. My studio does way over 34 weddings a year so its gets a bit complicated if you don't book early. You can get everyone else anytime but if you have your heart set on certain type of photography don't hesitate to the last min.
Then its all down hill from there. I have even had brides book me even before they book their venue. Which can be good because, I know some tricks on venues use as well as and some tips I can give you to save a heap of money on the venue. Then you can get more photo + video!

;)

If you book and appointment with me I can also help you plan the wedding around these little tips. Its been very helpful for my Brides. I even had one bride save close to half on her venue. So its no joke, us insiders know all the tricks to saving you money on your wedding day.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I was in kindergarden and my mother gave me a film camera. Since I was that age I was using a camera as well as going to art schools. At 3rd grade I was winning 1st place in about every local art contests. When I was in High School I won a Boston Globe Golden Key, Silver Key and was the only one to win the Golden Key for Photography. Therefore I went to one of the best Art Schools for Photography, Graduated with 2 Art Degrees. I started apprenticing and working professionally since age 16 for studios, film companies and magazines. Needless to say I have been shooting a long long time. At least over 16 years of my life I have been shooting on a professional level and winning awards. I also while in college got bit with the Film bug and worked on many hit TV shots creating the title and artwork for them. I've worked professionally shooting celebrities, models and musicians before I started shooting weddings. I also create commercial design work during the wedding off season and work as a commercial photographer.

ART IS MY LIFE, and I have always known that I would be an artist since I was about 3 years old. I know thats a crazy idea but it is true. I was drawing before I could stand up as a child. I have always known what I have wanted to do in my life and I strive to be the best photographer out there. I look up to female photographers like Margaret Burke-White, Annie Leibovitz. I also love the classic fashion photographers. I love glancing at covers of 1940's-1960's Vogue Magazines. Looking at fashion photographers like like Helmut Newton and pop artist like Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein. I also have a love of 1950's drawings of quirky/sassy pin up girls. I feel my photography is a combination of all those influences above. As well as the occasional touch of My Fair Lady, Gone with the Wind meets the modern day bride.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I think every week after I shoot a wedding and I see the photos I get really excited. There are so many times I can't even think about who was better or worse. I get really excited about weddings. I recently did a wedding film for Megan + Collins and we did some stylistic editing which I had always wanted to do. The bride had no idea we were going to make that for her, so it was a surprise I was sitting on for a few weeks. I am so happy with how that video turned out and it was exactly what I had visioned doing when I was shooting it. It turned out really beautiful that film and there is one tear jerking part which myself and my staff would always cry at and after watching and editing it over 100 times we finally got flat on that. However, reading the letter her mother wrote to me about the wedding video brought tears to my eyes and I was so happy that I was able to create that wedding film for them. That out weighs everything.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. All the time and sometimes I teach.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. Not complicated at all. I'm pretty simple with everything. I have packages which are guidelines on what everyone wants but I can also make something unique to suit your needs and wants. Thats really what the appointments are for.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot. Do Do Do Do. You also have to buy some pretty pricey tools. My cameras cost over 16k so needless to say if you are planning on doing this professional know that its a bit pricey. Try taking some art classes to learn the basics and its literally thousands of hours of shooting to even know kinda what you are doing. Once you know why and how you got that photograph and can memorize all the settings of a photograph by looking at a picture then you will know you are a professional. I can guess about every exposure in every photo I see. Its a talent but you need to know how to do it, if not, you could get stuck at a wedding or event and be clueless on what to do or why your camera is acting funny. Its not acting funny you just don't know what you are doing to it.

But the one true test of any artist is... does it communicate :)
