Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Hiring a DJ can be a challenge since there are so many of them out there and they all have their "own" stories to tell. I would advise to look closely at their "personality" and "planning" options. A DJ does much more than just play music. They are very much "in charge" of your event, they have the mic and the "voice" of the afternoon or evening. The DJ should know certain details about your event prior so that it is led in the direction that you envision. They should also have the personality that you are looking for. Are you looking for a "club" DJ, an "entertainer" or someone to just come to your event and professionally MC and lead you and your guests into a night of formalities and fun! Ask questions about their own back-ground and what types of events they focus on. Be cautious of the DJ that states they are a wiz with ALL types of events.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. There are two of many "inside" secrets that I have to share. The first is that being a "professional" DJ costs a considerable amount of money and many people do not realize the investments in equipment, music and advertising that go into being competitive in the industry. The second is that most people have no idea of what really goes on "behind the DJ booth". I think there is a misconception that a DJ is just standing back there playing music and this is not true at all! There are countless things going on from preparing for the next formality (gauging the right timing and gathering the right people) to assuring other vendors are also prepared, i.e. photographers, food services, etc. for the next formality. There is the social aspect of people coming up to request music and sorting all of the various playlists from different sources and of course carefully watching the dance floor to assure that it "flows" appropriately. There is a lot of thought that goes into what music to play when to satisfy a crowd of various ages. Both of these are proof as to why the idea of bringing an "iPod" to play music during a large event came and went quickly! People were doing that for a short amount of time (years ago) until people understood the impact of having someone there to take the role of the Disc-Jockey and MC.
