My family and I have been working with Select Contracting for almost ten years now. Bruce is extremely professional and fair. He always gives us a range of products and explains the differences with price and quality of the choices. He has done numerous projects for us ranging from redoing a porch to building a deck to painting, among many others. I would recommend him for any home service improvement project.

Question and answer

Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.

A. Recently, I finished replacing concrete support piers (4 ft. deep) for a deck in Stratham NH. The existing piers were not deep enough (1 to 2 feet) and tilted due to frost heave -- very dangerous for a deck ten feet above ground level.

First of the week I replaced a rotted staircase leading to a farmers style porch in Georgetown MA. I used all pressure-treated lumber with PVC trim. I modified the original design to meet building code requirements and have all step risers the same height.

Last week I insulated a crawl space under a family room which was an addition built about three feet off the ground in Reading MA. The floor was insulated and covered beneath with 1/2" plywood -- the new owners were cold already this year! So, I added 2" thick foam, foil-lined panels to the underside and sealed all seams and edges with tape. Meanwhile I re-hung the gutters on the house with hidden hangers -- the older style spikes had worked their way out an inch or two and the gutters were becoming loose.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Repairs to your home or upgrades can be done in a variety of ways and styles. Get a detailed proposal from your contractor and make sure you see eye-to-eye on the work that needs to be done and any possible additional work that the job may lead to.
