Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Because our industry is not regulated or certified, look for teachers who are doing this professionally and have at least a Bachelor's Degree in Music. There are many hobbyists who teach music lessons, and while you might save money up right because they charge less, you are wasting time and money in the long run, not to mention that a bad teacher is the reason most children quit music lessons before they get to enjoy it!

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Again, look for a teacher who has at least a Bachelor's Degree in Music and the teacher should be teaching their primary instrument. A good teacher should have good fundamental knowledge of music and can play their instrument at a high level. Even though they might be a beginner, you need a professional and an expert to ensure that you are learning correctly. You wouldn't hire someone who loves to read law books but never had training to be your lawyer, so why would you do so with a music teacher?

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What is your background and training in music? Is this your primary instrument? How much experience have you had in teaching lessons? What kind of curriculum and structure do you provide to ensure that my child's music education is going in the right direction? Do you offer recitals and performances?
