Introduction: Make a breakthrough in understanding math! Whether you have a struggling first grader, a bored sixth grader, a home-schooler who has outgrown the programs available, a high school or college student who needs an extra boost - or you are a graduate student in physics who is finally ready to admit that you don't really understand what you are doing - I can help! I will take you or your child through the foundations of mathematics in an exciting and thoroughly enjoyable new way. Your first grader will be doing algebra with deep understanding by third or fourth grade, your sixth grader will be doing calculus by ninth. I am looking for students or groups of students to teach, from "special needs" to "gifted", age 8 to 80 - and especially for working teachers who would like to consider learning this program and possibly piloting it in classrooms with my support. I have been working with Dr. Rob MacDuff, whom I met through the Modeling Instruction Program at Arizona State University, on a new approach to mathematics - CIMM, or Cognitive Instruction in Mathematics Modeling. This program is producing dramatic results in Phoenix public schools, and with my own private students. I have taught the CIMM program in small groups or individually, to students ranging in age from 10 to 14, from genius level to profoundly impaired, including students with diagnoses of AS, autism and NLD, with wonderful results. I've also taught CIMM to a class of working elementary teachers in a graduate education program, ages 23 to 50, many of whom made startling breakthroughs in their skill with and understanding of mathematics. After a career as a machinist and self-taught engineer, I went back to school for an MS in Radiation Science and a PhD in Physics. In recent decades I've taught physics, math, nuclear technology and statistics at the high school, college and university level, including three years teaching remedial math in an inner-city high school and two years teaching remedial college math. The search for a way to do this better was what lead me to Arizona State and the CIMM program, a program which turns out to be much more than a better way to teach. I offer group rates, and will consider special rates for groups of low-income students. I have or have had students who come to my apartment, students in Worcester and Shrewsbury whose homes I travel to, and internet students as far away as California, Georgia and Nova Scotia, whom I teach using webcams and whiteboards. I can also teach using a shared-screen program, for groups at multiple sites or students whose internet bandwidth won't support high-resolution video chatting.
