Arch. Jake Thiel is a graduate of Pratt Institute’s Bachelor of Architecture program and a participant in the fourth year semester abroad in Rome. He believes in drawing upon a strong network of ethical professionals in pursuit of designing a better world, one building at a time. In recognition of the union of arts and sciences, our process is a synthesis of an ever more efficient functionality, bound by higher aesthetic principles. Having written extensively concerning the concept of unfinished architecture, we see architecture as the lineage of building in perpetual adaptation to fluctuating social habitat.

Jake is sole proprietor of Edifice Architectural, LLC and maintains an active affiliation with PLAT Studio in Rome, Italy. Currently active on four continents, both studios work together as an extended, cross-cultural group of both technical and creative professionals; our capacity for project resolution is therefore extensive. A flare for Italian design tempered by American ingenuity characterizes our group’s distinct progressive design process. As a proponent of sustainable development, our practice helps meet the particular needs of each project, while navigating the complexities of the contemporary building and design fields worldwide.

Together with Italian partner Proff. Arch. Alessia Maggio Ph.d, Edifice Architectural, LLC/PLAT Studio, Rome believes in an active design process to develop and ultimately deliver the highest quality product. The group does not depend on computers but simply uses them as a tool along with hand-drawn sketches and cardboard models. Photographic quality renderings contemporary with the latest technologies are employed in predetermining the actual ambient effects of the design proposal. As well, detailed models are utilized as an integral part of our process, with direct and vital application to engineering and construction sequence. The group doesn’t deal in “styles”, but promotes progressive design, that which looks beyond the modern or contemporary and takes the timelessness of building into consideration. This is why “sustainable development” and the concept of the unfinished has become paramount to the group’s unique philosophy.

Edifice Architectural also renovates wooden boats through an affiliate master carpenter in Glenville, Pennsylvania. The attention to detail and inherent dynamics as well as learning from tradition is what makes wooden boats such interesting design work. Boats are sold at auction or renovated on commission.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. The best advice I can offer for a customer looking to hire an architect is to be as clear and candid as possible regarding the program of the project. An architect needs to know precisely what such a project should mean to the owner, aside from payment and permission the accuracy and moreover clarity of this description is the responsibility of the owner. For to endeavor to achieve such a result is the responsibility of the architect. Be honest and expressive with your architect and your architectural dreams are sure to be realized. Architecture should be as much about self discovery for an owner as much as it is for his or her designer.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. If I were a customer I wish I I knew what it would be like to use my new building before I pay for it. The secret to this is trusting in your architect and his ability to compose space. Architecture may be defined as the art of spatial composition and therefore knowing the inherent significance of form, structure, material and space and their potential for compositional "unity" is imperative to successful architectonic expression. If an architect knows how to illustrate space by drawing free hand, then he is in touch with the paradigms of spatial composition and can help a client to preview a project before its subsequent construction.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Are the architects responsible for design cultured: well educated, traveled...? Are you attentive enough to detail to work by hand while maintaining the technological edge regarding the latest computer aided technologies such as 3D modeling and rendering software? Is the architect well connected in the industry? Is the architect's portfolio diverse or formulaic? Are you choosing an architect for his particular brand or formula, or for his attention to your particular needs?

Q. What is your greatest strength?

A. Diversity and flexibility are our greatest strengths. We are responsive to the particular needs of the individual client and to identifying and subsequently realizing his/her unique needs. We believe that personality is paramount as a design catalyst and should never be overshadowed by a designers reputation. We have traveled the world in pursuit of great architecture and have determined that the best projects are those that unite the particularities of the site with the individual vision of the respective owner. Getting to know the owner is the first step to every project, the rest is creative adventure!
