Hello,

My name is Kenneth Judd. I am a recent graduate of Towson University with a B.S. in Chemistry. I am a certified level two tutor by the College Reading and Learning Association.

I have been employed by Harford Community College as a mathematics and science tutor for three years now, and have been privately tutoring grade school/high school students for one year in a variety of subjects. If you or someone you know is looking to improve skills in mathematics or science for any reason, or you're looking to improve your grade in a current course, prepare for a future course, or get ready for a test (GRE, GED, Placement tests), I'd be glad to help! I might even have some supplementary books to lend depending on the subject.

The approach I have to tutoring is a first principles approach. It's amazing how many concepts in mathematics that appear completely unrelated are actually rooted in the same principles.

Over the years I've been working with students, I have become very good at breaking down what may at first appear to be complex concepts and making them seem much more simple, and I have learned a good deal myself along the way.

I believe two of the most important attributes in order to become a good math student are organization and perseverance. Once a concept is learned, the only way to make it stick is through practice, and I will emphasize that. Learning math becomes much easier when you develop an understanding of the reasoning behind each step taken, and that is where I can help.

I am proficient in all grade school/high school math classes, as well as science courses (chemistry, biology, and physics). I am experienced tutoring all college level mathematics courses up to and including calculus III, all undergraduate chemistry courses, and 100 and 200 level physics and biology courses.

I prefer public libraries as the meeting place for tutoring sessions. Another option is Harford Community College, as I am already there several days a week. I would be willing to come to the tutee's home if that is the only thing that works for you depending on the circumstances. If the tutee is a high/middle/elementary school student I have no problem with parent(s) sitting in on the session if they would like to. Any feedback at all would be welcome!

I have very flexible availability (mornings, evenings, or weekends could all be options), and would be willing to travel for a slight increase in the fee (about $3 per 10 minutes of driving time after the first 15 minutes).

If you would like to know more about me, request references, or begin tutoring send me an email and I will reply with my phone number and a good time to call, or ask for your phone number so I can call you. I typically charge $20 per hour.

Below are various places I have met people at and the cost for each location. If we spend more than one hour working together on the same day, the second hour is $20 regardless of the location. Other locations would work to, I just haven't been there yet!

The following are my rates:

* Fallston, Bel Air, and Jarrettsville Libraries - $20
* Bel Air Barnes and Noble - $20
* Harford Community College (On a day that I am already there) - $20
* Edgewood and Joppatowne Libraries - $23
* Harford Community College (On a day that I'm not working there) - $23
* Havre De Grace and Aberdeen Libraries - $25
* White Marsh/Perry Hall locations - $25
* Towson University, Towson Library - $27
* Reisterstown/Randallstown - $30
* Baltimore City campuses or libraries - $30-$35
* Cecil County locations - $30-35

I am available in Baltimore, Maryland.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. So far it seems to be a fairly even split between high school students and college students. I am currently working with more science courses than mathematics courses.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. If I were hiring me, I would want to talk to me first and get an idea of what my approach to tutoring would be, which will be slightly different depending on the subject as well as the student. I would also check references, which I will gladly supply.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I enjoy working with students in math and science, and have fun well I'm working. I believe the best way to approach these difficult subjects is to minimize the amount of memorization needed by learning tricks to help figure things out rather than simply remembering everything, and I have gotten very good at translating this method to students.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I enjoy working with people, and I also enjoy mathematics in general. I like to see others learn and suceed in these areas as well.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. One of the more common questions is "how do you get past test anxiety?". The best way to do that is to get comfortable with the material to the point where you're not nervous about taking tests. Also, if you're taking a difficult subject like math or science don't think you have to know how to solve the problem as soon as you read it. If you don't know the answer instantly, try to see if you can figure out a way to work your way to the answer.
