Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. It is good to look at the background and experience of the Home Inspector you plan to hire. Like any other profession, there are great differences. If you are purchaseing a home, it is likely to be one of the largest investments you will ever make. Make sure you have a thorough Home Inspector who really knows his stuff. When you receive the written Home Inspection Report that includes digital photos, that should give you the peace of mind in having a much better understanding of the systems in your home and the condition they are in.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. There are several National Home Inspector organizations. The oldest and best one is ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors). I do recommend that any customer hire only an ASHI Home Inspector. All ASHI Certified Home Inspectors are Certified by a third party. Further, ASHI has the highest code of ethics in the Home Inspection industry.

It is still important to check the background and experience of the ASHI Home Inspector. It's also not a bad idea to talk to that Inspector directly to find out how well they communicate. It is always advised when possible to be present when the Inspection is being conducted. That way, if you have any questions they can be answered at that time.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What National Home Inspector organization do you belong to?
How long have you been in business?
What kind of a report do you produce? Is it computer generated and does it include photos?
How long to do think it will take you to complete the inspection?
How soon after the inspection is finished will I get the finished Home Inspection Report?
When do you expect payment for services? Do you accept Checks, Credit Cards or Cash for payment?
Suppose I have questions about my home months or years after the inspection was done- can I still contact you and get answers?
