Question and answer

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Not all guitar lessons are created equal. ANYONE can post a "guitar lessons" ad on Craigslist - that doesn't mean they know what they're talking about.

Among all the criteria you should consider when seeking a guitar teacher, the most important thing is whether they have a track record of actually helping their students to get better.

It is almost ALWAYS a mistake to choose a guitar teacher based on:

* lowest price (you get what you pay for)
* closest to home or in-home (will not leaving the house help you get as good as possible at the guitar?)
* they teach "all styles" (do they teach them WELL?)
* the lessons are in the store where you bought the guitar (this is common, but is not an indication that the lessons are of good quality)

Instead, remember that guitar lessons with ANYONE are going to be an investment of hundreds, even thousands of dollars over the long run. You want results, or else you wouldn't be looking for a teacher - invest wisely and get the most EFFECTIVE teacher you can find.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Most guitar teachers teach the same things, in the same ways, to every one of their students. This often involves either teaching from a generic "method" book, or basically reinventing/rewording the same approach as a method book, with no consideration for the student's specific goals.

I have developed my lesson and training programs with the individual student in mind, and I create a personalized STRATEGY for each one of my students to help them reach their specific goals in the shortest possible amount of time.

I offer more than just plain "guitar lessons," going beyond mere scales and chords. Other guitar teachers teach scales and chords; I help my students transform and improve their lives.

I also proudly offer the only dedicated Metal and Lead Guitar training programs in the Washington, DC region.

For Metal fans and aspiring Virtuosos, this means that you no longer have to settle for lessons with teachers that don't even play, let alone specialize in, the style of music you want to play. I have been playing Metal and Shred since 1992, and I am well-versed in these styles.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love everything about creating music, especially when I am able to use my own knowledge & past experiences to help someone else overcome their own frustrations and confusion and start playing the guitar the way he/she wants to.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. In order to keep on top of the most cutting-edge teaching methods and lesson formats, I am a member of the Elite Guitar Teachers' Inner Circle (EGTIC), where I receive ongoing training from master guitar teacher Tom Hess (guitarist of Rhapsody of Fire).

As a member of the EGTIC, I am in contact with some of the top guitar teachers in the world, whose highly effective methods are incorporated into my lesson programs.

As a working professional musician in my 2nd signed band, I also draw upon my own extensive industry knowledge and experience in my lesson programs, including but not limited to:

songwriting, recording, audio production, forming a band, auditioning successfully, effective promotion & networking, live performance, knowing how to choose and use the right equipment for your goals, how to compose orchestral/classical music, and even how to write music for film (my own music is featured in National Lampoon's "The Legend of Awesomest Maximus").
