Introduction: My goal is to not only make you a great guitar player, but for you to feel confident in yourself and in what you do. For the past 20 years I've offered what I believe to be the best in guitar instructions in the Baltimore area. I've met with by now thousands of students - all with their own unique dream. Music was just a dream of mine when I started playing guitar at age 5. I was fortunate enough to learn how to play from one of the greatest teachers around. He did more than make me a great guitar player. He made me a feel good about my goals, and really listened to what I wanted to do and play, even though our styles couldn't be more different. He never forced his style on me. Instead he brought the best out of me based off of my goals. He made lesson plans where he taught me how to understand music by using songs and artists that I liked. I learned much faster, and it was much more fun. I've carried his approach with me for my whole life. Each one of my students will get that same attention. I like to meet each person face to face (which is why I offer a free trial lesson) in order to better understand what they want out of learning guitar. Maybe you don't know what you want... either way, I will be able to build a personalized guitar lesson experience that suits you. Your unique goals, vision, and dreams are important to me. With practice, and the right teacher, anyone can become a great guitar player. I'm fortunate to be able to do what I love, and I enjoy most when I can help others along their musical journey. Watching someone get that look of satisfaction on their face when they reach a goal, or play a song they've always waned to, or play that first show - that's very satisfying.

I had always toyed around with the idea of playing guitar, but for one reason or another I just never seemed to make the time. Once I finally began to talk seriously about playing guitar, my wife bought my first lesson with Scott Spivey at Baltimoreguitarlessons.com for Christmas. She spent some time researching the different options for lessons, but most word of mouth recommendations pointed to Scott. Prior to any lesson, Scott began setting up a lesson plan that suited my specific needs. He helped me through the process of buying my first guitar, established a schedule that fit my needs, and began customizing lessons around my musical taste. I honestly thought that my first lesson would be simple chords, scales, and notes on the fret board type of stuff. I was wrong! It was much more fun than that! The very first day we started working on playing a song! The lessons I receive are created specifically for me, and are not a cookie cutter approach to teaching guitar that you will likely find in books, online, or with other teachers. He makes the lessons fun and keeps you interested by mixing the technical with the enjoyable. YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED. I have been taking lessons from Scott for around 15 months and I have learned to play roughly 15 songs from start to finish. We have worked through material from Dave Matthews, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Goo Goo Dolls, Jack Johnson, Alice in Chains, Johnny Cash, and on and on. Scott is an incredibly talented musician. He can play anything! Matter of fact, he probably already knows how to play the song you want to play! If not, it only takes him a matter of minutes to work through the song for you. He is extremely patient and enjoys your successes as much as you will. You will never feel intimidated, out of place, or belittled. Scott goes the extra mile to help you succeed. He takes an interest in your progress and will help you get through the frustrating times. He has an amazing ability to identify why you are struggling and quickly help you make the adjustments necessary to be successful. After every lesson, I leave feeling encouraged and that I’m a better guitar player. That’s all I have ever asked from Scott and he continues to deliver. I would highly recommend Scott for anyone interested in learning to play guitar. I promise you will not regret choosing Scott Spivey as your choice for guitar lessons.

I'm 35 years old, and I have been a student of Scott's for about 2 months now. I have been playing off and on since high school, but never understood the guitar. I had a few years of pretty bad lessons from a relative, but knew no better, and quit when I finally got to a point of saying "I just don't get it". I picked it up here and there over the next ten years, and started really trying to teach myself a few years ago. I had some decent success, I understood the fundamental things that had previously held me back, but I eventually got overwhelmed with all there was to learn. And I realized I had no idea how to put anything I knew to use, or how to just pick up a guitar and play something from inside my own head. So I decided to take lessons. The first teacher lasted a couple months. I got some good advice, but no real specific direction. After a couple months of that, I decided I didn't need someone to tell me what I already knew, so I started looking again. And this time I found Scott. After 15 years of attempting to learn the guitar, I can finally say that I understand things. The fretboard is no longer a confusing, overwhelming mystery. The bits and pieces I had put together for myself have finally come together as part of a much higher understanding of the guitar. While it doesn't lay out as cleanly and obviously as a piano, it is no less logical or systematic. Scott has also had much more to offer as far as improvising and using the knowledge that I have, and for refining areas of technique and adding to my phrasing skills There has been nothing vague like "try to get this faster" (a previous teachers kind of advice). Music can be made at any speed or ability level, and Scott is making a big difference in my ability to do just that. He has confirmed things I thought I knew, and has introduced concepts and ways of looking at things I had previously not seen or had written off for one reason or another. Scott is also passionate about what he does. I have yet to have a lesson end on time, even after I remind him that time is up! You can tell Scott loves to teach, and takes it seriously. He is patient about it, though, and gives you the time and space to grow. Many weeks I do not have anywhere near as much time to play and practice as I would like. We go at my pace. I'm looking forward to seeing where I go from here! And yes, Scott can play that.
