Dr. Bella Oster has been my two sons' piano teacher since they were 4 1/2 years old. My sons are now 7 and 8 years old. Dr. Oster has been a wonderful piano teacher. I also took piano lessons when I was young for 9 years. But Dr. Oster has taught my kids so much more than my own piano teacher in less than half the time. They can now play advanced pieces like Chopin's Nocturne in E Minor, Op. 72 No. 1 and Kabalevsky's Sonatina 1 Op. 13 No. 1. She has a very effective teaching method that trains kids to have an analytical mind which helps them tackle difficult pieces more easily. She also provides the opportunity for her students to perform in major concert stages around the world. We had just come back from an Eastern European Concert tour in Prague, Krakow, and Budapest over the summer which her music school has organized. This was a wonderful experience for me and my kids.

My daughter started piano lesson with Dr. Oster since she was 3 year old and has been 8 years by now. Dr. Oster is a determined teacher, she dedicate her career to teacher children to achieve through music. She have brought her students not only high level of piano performance, broad knowledge of music history, more importantly some of the best quality as a person in life, such as, honest, confident, discipline, diligent, respect and perseverance. Her students have played at most prestigious venues both in USA and internationally, such as Carnegie hall, Kennedy Center, numerous embassies, many famous universities. Her students also go to senior apartments and hospital to perform. We also traveled together internationally. This summer, we went to east europe to play at Prague, Krakow and Budapest as a group, we all had a great and memorable time. Dr. Oster, Thank you!

Our eldest daughter (8yo) has been with Dr. Oster for 3 years, and our younger (5yo) for 1 year. I personally found Dr. Oster a bit intimidating at first, but the kids took to her from the beginning and just love her. Dr. Oster is not for everybody. Here is a brief summary of Dr. Oster's teaching philosophy: 1. Start them early. In contrast to other teachers who don't want to take kids before age 7 or 8, Dr. Oster prefers to start them early, as early as 4 or even 3. 2. Don't baby them. Her driving philosophy is that kids can absorb much more than most of us think. Other teachers who will take young kids dumb down the lessons: no note reading, no expression, no regard for proper technique, etc. They will lavish praise on a child so long as she/he plays the right notes (and sometimes even if they don't). Not here. From the beginning, Dr. Oster's students are taught to read notes, key signatures, understand rhythmic notation, accidentals. They are taught proper form and technique. They are taught expression and dynamics. Apart from the piano instruction, they are required to take music theory classes once a week, which are taught at a college-level introductory theory course (circle of fifths, intervals and chords, etc.). They are required to take the Maryland state exams in music. And frankly, you will be amazed at what your child can pick up. 3. Heavy parental involvement is required. You do not drop off your kid, or let them practice by themselves. You will be sitting in the piano classes, to understand what your child is learning so you can guide them at home. You will be attending your child's music theory classes, helping her/him grasp concepts. You will be practicing with them at home, making sure they make progress. [So one positive byproduct is that parents end up learning a lot as well!] 4. It is hard work. There is no set amount of practice time; they will have to practice as much as necessary to make progress. That may be a little, or a lot. In our case, it is about 30 min to an hour every night for our 5-year old, and 1-2 hours a night for our 8-year old. Lessons continue throughout the year, with only a 2-week break. If you are taking a vacation, the clock does not stop; you will need to make up the missed classes and catch up to where you would have been without a break. 5. Dr. Oster sees herself as (and in actuality is) a co-parent of your child. These are more than piano lessons, these are life lessons. Your child will be learning: (i) how to focus; (ii) that she/he is capable of things beyond what most people expect; (iii) that hard work and discipline are essential for success; (iv) to be patient with themselves; (v) to have fun while working (otherwise they will quit); (vi) and to aim for excellence, not just to be "good enough." 6. Dr. Oster believes in immersion in the arts and culture. There are field trips to watch concerts and ballet performances at the Kennedy Center or Strathmore; and field trips to the Library of Congress, the Shakespeare Theater, and Hillwood Gardens. 7. Your child will be tested. To ensure progress, there are periodic tests where your child will be tested (via a recorded performance) on the piece she/he is currently learning: on notes and rhythm, on technique, on expression and dynamics, on tempo. Eventually she/he will join performances, which are not your typical recitals; these are concerts at serious venues (Constitution Hall, embassies, Kimmel Center, Ivy League universities, European concert venues, etc.) where concert-level performances are expected; these kids do not get a pass because they are kids. Bottom line: if you believe in your child's potential, and are willing to put in the time and energy to bring it out, Dr. Oster is an excellent teacher. If you want casual piano lessons, you're better off somewhere else.

My daughter has been with Dr. Oster for 8 years. Dr. Oster is a very unique teacher and caters to each child's strengths and weaknesses through her teaching. My daughter is naturally shy and not very expressive emotionally, but she has become more expressive and confident through playing piano under the guidance of Dr. Oster. Dr. Oster also provides very rigorous and intense pieces for her students to learn, and gives them the necessary tools to do so more independently as they grow older, but all the while with her counseling. Many people are constantly amazed by my daughter's piano playing due to difficulty of these pieces. The perseverance and work ethic necessary to master these pieces is astounding and are invaluable life lessons that my daughter has acquired through learning from Dr. Oster. Dr. Oster truly wants her students to excel in all aspects of life. We are very thankful to have her in our lives.

Twelve years ago, when I was looking for a piano teacher for my three-year-old daughter, I was hoping to find a teacher who was competent, strict, knowledgeable, artistic, loving and understanding children and most importantly who had the passion for teaching. Later on, I realized that competency, knowledge, and dedication are not good enough to form an excellent educator. An outstanding teacher will provide you with a vision, shall be able to reveal a child’s potential, shall be capable of nurturing a child’s strength, and shall be willing to guide a child to utilize and enjoy his or her full potential. We found those qualities in Dr. Oster. My daughter has been learning piano with Dr. Oster for twelve years. Throughout her years with Dr. Oster, she has been rewarded with confidence and self-discipline. We are very pleased to see that our little girl grew into a confident, well rounded young lady. Dr. Oster’s passion for music instills a life-long love of music in her students. Her profound knowledge of music, especially piano music and history is astonishing. She is a strong believer in early childhood education and in particular, how professional music training in early childhood can fundamentally enhance a child’s development; she believes public performance is the crown for professional musicians. Therefore she exposed her students to various concerts performances. Under Dr. Oster’s guidance, starting from four years old, my daughter has been to numerous esteemed venues to perform with a lot of memorial experiences. Those experiences tremendously enrich her young life. From a simple curtsy or bow, to how to smile, Dr. Oster has helped to shape boys and girls into young men and women.
