Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Our most common jobs are service calls or equipment that is no longer working properly.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. My advice would be to do your research and have some background information before your contractor gets there. Also, when comparing bids make sure to compare "apples to apples". Some bids may be higher or lower than others depending on what is actually offered in the bid. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions. Any contractor that won't take the time to talk to you or gets annoyed because you're asking questions is not the contractor you want to hire.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. If I were a customer, I, more than anything, would want to know enough about HVAC to be able to tell when a contractor isn't being totally honest. My customers have told me about some completely ridiculous things that other contractors have said. My inside secret would be to do as much research as you can before deciding on a contractor.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Buyers should know their budget for the project, even before they get their first bid. If you know that you can't pay more than $XXXX for the project, then when you get your first bid then you will know right away whether to get financing or wait until you save more money. Also, if you are brand conscious, do some research on that brand and other brands you are interested in and only call contractors that rep those brands.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Question: Should I buy a larger HVAC system?

Answer: Each customer's situation is different. Heat load calculations (manual J) must be performed to properly size the heating and cooling equipment in the home.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I was replacing a gas furnace for an elderly woman about 8 years ago. Her home was not in the greatest shape and I assume that the house was approx 40-50 year old. As I was working in the basement I noticed that every time I shined my flashlight into a certain corner of the ceiling I got a reflection. I go over to investigate and wouldn't you know it, there was a huge snake coiled up in the ceiling of the basement. I tried to catch it, but couldn't so I casually went upstairs and told the homeowner. She went ballistic!!! And because she was so excited I naturally got excited and here the two of us are completely overreacting to the snake. Long story short, I ended up paying an exterminator to come trap the snake and the homeowner was forever grateful!

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I wish that homeowners actually knew how much science and mathematics actually goes into our trade. Many customers believe that what they see us do is the bulk of what we know.
