Question and answer

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I am a leader in the field of Elder Law because I find my own answers. Many attorneys take a class from another lawyer to learn what the law is. I hit the books and do my own research. I am an expert in Medicaid because I actually read the statutes and regulations, not just what some other lawyer has written about the statutes and regulations.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. When i can save my client's estate from being used up on nursing home costs, or when I can keep my client from going to prison, it gives me great pleasure. That is when I know I made a difference in someone's life.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. "How much will your services cost?" is the most common question I hear--especially before the initial consultation. Many callers think that I am being evasive when I tell them that I cannot estimate the fees without meeting them and finding out the problem I will be expected to solve. I take a holistic approach and consider all of my prospective client's circumstances before giving them a price. Then they say, "Wow! That's a lot of money, but what you will do for me is worth a lot more. Let's get started."

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I was consulted by a man who was terrified that he would have to use all his savings to pay for his wife's care in a nursing home. When I told him how we would get the state to pay for her care without spending any marital assets, he almost broke down in tears of relief. He and his children could hardly believe it when Medicaid was approved. My clients are often amazed by the results I achieve for them.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I wish more people knew how much attorneys like me just want to help them achieve their goals.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I often speak to groups of lawyers, other professionals, and interested citizens on Elder Law topics. As a leader in the field, I feel a responsibility to share my knowledge with as many people as are interested.
