Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Understand that educating yourself on energy efficiency is more than listening to product sites. You must use the "system approach" to design to make your home design truly energy efficient, and cost effective.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. It's really easy to design a house energy efficient and have your payback period on construction costs start from the day you move in. If you don't design a truly energy efficient home, you lose money. If you do, you make money, cash, from the day you move in.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How many years have you been in your profession? How many projects have you had built? Why build and energy efficient home? Will building an energy efficient home cost more money than I can save on my energy bills? Does you designer use a system approach to design or do they simply add items to the design thus adding extra costs but not reducing the energy bills? Can the designer provide builders and contractors to execute the design? Does the designer have any speaking or educating experience?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Do they have their own property yet? What is their budget? What type of style are they looking for? What features do they want in the plan? What features do they want on the exterior? What rooms are most important to them? What rooms are not important to them? IT is important to know what your design and use priorities are before you start to design. By understanding this, it makes it much easier to make design decisions along the way. Design is a step by step process with an infinite number of decisions that need to be made along the way. By setting up your priorities you will be ahead of the game.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. For over 30 years I have been designing energy efficient homes. I have designed homes when both active and forms of passive solar were popular. The main reason they were popular came down to dollars and cents. It always does. What makes energy efficient design work in the twenty first century is we now have the technology to design an highly energy efficient home and make it cost effective. My designs save you money from the day you move in. In fact, if you don't build an energy efficient home you are losing money from the day you move in. This means you can now turn your home into an investment instead of your largest expense.
