Question and answer
Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. My most common types of jobs include consulting with patients, one on one or in a group. I offer home visits, phone and online consultations as well so I'll often be doing those. A large part of my time is spent keeping up with the latest medical research and updating my skills/knowledge through continuing education. Another aspect is actually writing reports and treatment plans for my patients.
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. I recommend confirming that the naturpathic doctor is licensed and registered with his/her professional association. Unfortunately, there are a lot of unqualified individuals out there who claim to be "naturopaths" who have not completed to the proper training. I'd also recommend asking if the practitioner offers a free consultation so you can meet with the professional one-on-one and determine if he/she is a good fit for you. The doctor-patient relationship is very important.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I take the time to listen to my patients. The focus is patient-driven - what are their health goals and priorities. I work with patients to educate them about health and empower them with this knowledge so that they can take responsibility for their own health. The key is to identify the root causes. The root cause(s) determine the appropriate treatment plan.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I enjoy listening to my patients' stories. I went into this profession thinking I would help people and teach others, when, in fact, I've found that yes that's part of it, but even more so I learn from my patients. I also enjoy doing the "detective work" - really looking at a patient's health history in depth and discovering where we can make changes that will make the most difference.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. I most commonly get asked what a naturopathic doctor is ... and my response is that I help people with chronic health concerns like diabetes, heart disease and obesity, to overcome these issues naturally without the use of pharmaceuticals. A naturopath believes in the body's inherent ability to heal itself. I'm here to add health so that your body can do just that.
