The Northern Angler is a full-service fly shop with a fly fishing guide service. Our guides are fully licensed, insured, and are professional in every manner.

Repeat customers are the base of our business, and we welcome fly anglers of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Let our experienced guides show you our local fishing resources and help you with your skills.

Our shop is fully stocked with great fly fishing gear, flies, waders, fly rods, and reels. We carry Simms, Sage, Redington, Scott, Nautilus, Fishpond, and many other top fly fishing brands.

Conveniently located in downtown Traverse City, we are a short drive to the Manistee, Boardman, Platte, and Betsie Rivers, as well as fly fishing on local lakes and Grand Traverse Bay.

We also arrange hosted travel and fly fishing trips to the Bahamas, Alaska, British Columbia, and Florida.

The Northern Angler Rocks! Great service, huge selection, and quick delivery. Brian Pitser and his crew know fish and share their knowledge openly. They are also located in the middle of a rediculous number of fishing venues. Smallies, trout, steelhead, salmon, carp, pike, and panfish are all close at hand and might actually be within walking distance of his shop. Hell my wife can shop in downtown Traverse City while I fish, what could be easier?

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask quite a few questions to make sure you are going to get the experience out of your fly fishing trip that you are expecting. Make sure the guide you hire is fully licensed and insured and can meet your expectations of the day.
Our staff is comprised of guides with great people skills and are very experienced on the waters we fish.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Communication is the key with your guide. Let them know your skill levels and be honest, we know right away your fly fishing skill set. If there are any techniques that you would like to try, or learn more about, let us know. A good fishing experience sometimes is not necessarily about the fish, but the things you come away with and learn.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What are the conditions of the day? What type of equipment do you provide? Should I bring my own gear? Do you take beginners or children? Are flies included?
