A. Look for significant professional design experience in developing brands and marketing communications. Communicating successfully with your target audiences to further business goals and build your distinctive brand is an idea- and objective-driven process. It's not just about the logo.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Many people have access to the software tools that professional designers use, but the experienced professional designer brings the intellectual and creative expertise required to create effective communications and build brands. A high quality design process stems from education and experience. Managing the creative process well is critical to the success of the products.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What inspires you? How long have you been doing this work? Describe the process you use to develop visual communications? Can you provide professional references?

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. Some of the most exciting developments are the communication possibilities opened up by new digital devices—iPads, and smartphones, for example. There are wonderful new opportunities to tell clients' stories with compelling communications and apps developed for these devices.
