I am a freelance professional harpist, harp instructor, composer, recording artist, and healing harp practitioner with over 20 years of experience of performing hundreds of events, traveling and teaching.
My music has been part of some of the most heartfelt occasions the human experience has to offer, and is also award winning. My musical style is celtic fusion which joins celtic and classical expressions and stylings, a perfect combination for the harp. My repertoire includes, the classics, light jazz, celtic, renaissance and a host of original compositions that are highly regarded and can be heard on my five cds "Sea Whisperings," Mantle of Peace," "From the Bottom of My Harp," " Our Beautiful Baby," and " Rock of Ages,"
I am a patient calm teacher with all students. Some who just want to have a new experience, or a new hobby, improve their life skills, share their love in a new expression, or become professionals.
I also teach the basics of music, reading, and understanding the symbols. Another method of learning is called the rote method. it is the ancient way of learning where reading music is not required and all musical skills are learned by ear and sight or ear alone.
Many of my students have gone on to become music therapists, composers, arrangers, recording artists and professional harpists themselves.
All levels are accepted and we work toward your goals. My rates reflect harp lessons at $50.00 or less for lessons, depending on your age and the amount of time you want.
Special occasion performances start at $250.00.
A. Audition me as you would any other service. I look for a connection in a person so that you can develop to trust in my skills and ability to assist you in your goals. This will help you develop a passion for the harp. Expect to learn to musically roll over, crawl, toddle and walk. before you can leap and jump. Especially if you are an adult, you must give yourself some room to learn, make mistakes and have patience with your self. Learn to enjoy the Journey and develop a passion for this artistic endeavor.
A. The harp is one of the few instruments that you can sit down and immediately make beautiful sounds on.
The best way to learn the harp is to rent one before you buy. Have a first lesson scheduled before you rent and resist the urge to pluck and strum before that lesson because you can develop habits that you will have to unlearn.
There will still be a need for dedicated practice and time spent playing and enjoying the journey of learning.
The harp has a specific techniques, and habits that other instruments don't have. Finger, hand, arm and body positions are important. Stretching and strengthening and body mechanics help you become a better player.
Some of your learning will be off the harp, on the harp, and in your heart.
A. Do you love what you are doing.
Are you considered high quality by your peers?
Do you have referrals and references?
How long have you been giving service in your area of expertise?
Are you still learning ways to offer your service in a better way?
Can you teach me in my home so I can feel more comfortable, and absorb more learning.
A. Each student is an individual with experiences and desires that are different. The same goes for their body mechanics. Some hands are larger and have stronger fingers, some are not as strong. Each type has a place in the harp world.
The harp that you choose is also and important factor. Some people would like to sing with their instruments using them as accompaniment only. This requires a harp that has a warm and softer voice one that does not over power the voice.
Others want to be an instrumental soloist only so they will need a harp and subsequent technique to produce a full range of emotions to communicate their feelings. A harp with a brighter voice works well.
Some harps are heavier than others. I specialize in learning the Levered Celtic or Troubador size. However, the technique for this size harp is essentially the same as for the concert or pedal harp.
The difference is size, weight and cost. The harps that are used in the orchestras are up to five - ten times the cost of a Celtic harp and in many cases you can actually build your own Celtic or Troubador harp.
I have built several harps and I must tell you that you develop a special connection with your instrument when you do this. If you wish to play a larger harp you will always have the smaller harp to fall back on depending on the event or circumstance or when your harp needs maintenance. One harp is not more important than another
I like to help my students figure out which harp is best for their desires so that they are not stuck with an instrument that doesn't meet their needs.
A. I used to play in a cancer hospice. One day a patient's family had been called to his bedside and as I came in to play for "Bob" (not his real name), I saw that he was indeed very close to death. I played his favorite tunes especially Danny Boy and after a time left his family to continue their vigil.
While I was playing for some other people on a different floor a nurse came to me and exclaimed "Well did you hear about what happened to "Bob after you played for him?". He sat up and started entertaining his family and friends!"
That made me very happy and I could see the power of music to restore life and joy.
