Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. 10 years of experience is the minimum to acquire real expertise in any field. And even then, making the right decisions along the way makes a big difference.
Ask for examples of work from 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 1 year ago. Check the progress.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Geeks aren't the best salesman, the best salesman are seldom very good geeks. Insist on performance instead of pitches.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. Rapid results and clean designs. I make it look easy, because it is when a single person understands all aspects.
Commitment versus committee, your decision.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. Having an excuse to stay on top of the latest technologies.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. How much is it going to cost?
$500 per day for real results in real time. There is no waiting to see what I come up with in a week or month. You see the results at the end of each day.
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. A few, but none that fit in a few paragraphs.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. Good tech is simple tech. If you don't understand it, keep looking.
If somebody tells you they can take something complex and turn it into something simple, don't believe them. Ask them for the simple version first.
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. Hobby that turned into a passion. Started in the days of DOS on floppy drives.
Q. What are your most common types of jobs?
A. 50/50 Web development and OS X consulting.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. Finding the leaders and keeping up with them is the only way to truly keep up in Web dev. The playing field changes too rapidly for old skool education to make sense.
