Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The lifespan of a video tape is only 10-12 years! That means that all the memories stored on these tapes are beginning to fade, degrade, get fuzzy and even dark. Video tapes were originally created for businesses. They needed to record a meeting or training that would only be in use for only about a year. Longevity was NOT important.

What happened next was not what the designers of video foresaw. Consumers (that's you and me!) saw the potential to record important family memories on the new media... weddings, birthdays, vacations, everyday life... all on video tapes. But no one told us it was only temporary.

Today Home Video Studio can save those memories. We use exclusive archival Platinum 45 DVDs to preserve those memories for generations to come. PLUS they have a hardcoat backing to stand up even to deep scratches.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. VIDEO TAPE TO DVD:

On what kind of DVD will my memories be preserved?
(The lifespan of an industry standard silver DVD is only 10 years)

What kind of equipment do you use?
(Look for businesses that use professional-grade equipment)

Do you guarantee your work?

What kind of labeling and menuing system do you provide?
(Paper labels can come off the DVDs and get stuck in your DVD player. Menus are great and simple ways to navigate through your DVD, just like the big Hollywood movies.)

FILM TRANSFER TO DVD:

Do you provide frame-by-frame video capture or do you project my film onto another surface and record it?
(Frame-by-frame is the best and latest technology for capturing a true picture of what your film actually looks like.)

Do I get my film back?
(You should always get your original film back.)

Can you add music to my silent film?
(Music can add another dimension to your viewing experience. Today we seldom watch a movie or television show that does not have a soundtrack. Our minds are accustom to it. Some companies will offer both stock music and the option to customize your own.)

On what kind of DVD will my memories be preserved?
(The lifespan of an industry standard silver DVD is only 10 years)

Do I have to put my film in order before I bring it in?
(At Home Video Studio we will help you with organizing the film and we provide editing services after the transfer to assure that your film project is just right.)

If there are dark sections or sections with no images in my film will that be put on my DVD?
(These sections were either over or underexposed and some companies, like Home Video Studio, will remove them from the final DVD.)

What if my film has an odor? or mold? or is dried out?
(These items can damage your film and you need to take action now! Your service professional should be able to tell you, with confidence, how these things will affect your transfer and how your film will be handled.)

I don't know anything about this film. How do I measure it?
(As most film is transferred by the foot, you will need to know how many feet you have. Home Video Studio provides a helpful chart so that you can navigate the film process with ease.)
