- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Purchasing a new HVAC system is a big investment in your home. Getting prices from different companies can be stressful and you could run into pushy contractors as well. Reputable HVAC contractors should not be this way. Thats why Ive put together a few pointers and advise on how to handle it best should you find yourself confronted by a pushy sales person. 1) Do they have an HVAC license? Provide Permits? Many companies do not have an HVAC license, and some often avoid having proper Permits issued just to save themselves a few extra dollars. Having a valid license and aquiring proper Permits is required by law for new HVAC installations. Failing to do so could result in serious consequences in the future if your HVAC system is not properly installed or if the work performed doesnt get inspected by the local authorities. This is important to you as the consumer because those that are unlicensed can install the equipment improperly or in a manner that violates strict building and electrical codes, both of which can end up costing you more to fix in the long run. 2) High Pressure Sales Like I said in the introduction, purchasing a new HVAC system is a big investment. You should NOT feel pressured into buying a new comfort system. Lots of consumers get taken advantage of by contractors who intentionally mislead them into feeling as though they have no other choice. In fact, it is always your choice, so make sure that you are comfortable with all aspects of what you are proposed before accepting. Make sure that you receive a detailed proposal that outlines all aspects of the new installation, including specific products to be installed, warrantee agreements and details of the contractors satisfaction guarantee. 3) Warranty This word means nothing if the contractor installing the equipment will not stand behind their work. Problems do happen, and when they do, a reputable contractor will return and fix the problem if it falls under the warranty that they or the product manufacturer provide. 4) Freebies If the HVAC contractor is offering you a free 10 year parts and labor warranty, extended term financing or a free iPad, it is not FREE; you are paying for it because it has been figured into the price. Be a smart consumer and shop with your eyes wide open. By keeping these four items in mind, you will be able to make an informed buying decision on your next HVAC purchase. Pushy HVAC contractors are out there and you have the right to say no to them. They are pushy a lot of times knowing that if you do not buy from them while they are in your home, you most likely never will. To ensure youre making the best decision for your next HVAC purchase, always remember to get multiple estimates, ask pointed questions, check references, and never buy based solely on the lowest price; choose the solution that best meets your individual needs and offers the most value for your investment.
