Toner Design has been designing and developing websites since 1997, from small, single-page sites to large corporate sites. We work with content management systems, such as WordPress, Joomla, and CMS Made Simple, enabling our clients to update and maintain their own sites as much as they might wish, but can also provide simple HTML sites.
With 15 years of experience in web design and web troubleshooting, we know what works best for most clients and can advise you accordingly. We make sure our sites are correctly coded and will validate according to W3C standards, so your site is stable and works without problems. We can design your site for mobile devices as well.
We do not use templates purchased from other sites unless the client requests them, but design each site specifically for the client based on their logo and other marketing tools. In addition, we have a network of consultants, all US-based, with many years of experience upon whom we can call for any task which we are not able to perform in-house, so you get what you need and want.
Our long experience in SEO (Search eEgine Optimization) means we can help market your site on the web. Others promise high quality in a site; we make sure you get it.
A. • Look for a company that has been in the web design business for a while, preferably at the same location. Companies come and go, make sure they will be there when you need them.
• Look for a web designer with whom you feel comfortable. You are going to be working pretty closely with this person for a while, make sure you like their design style, and that their vision is much the same as yours.
• Ask for references and check them out--you want someone reliable, who will be there not just while your site is being developed, but afterwards when you have questions or need help.
• Check to be sure that their sites load quickly, even on a slow connection. Database sites do load more slowly, but if you have to wait for a while for their sites to load, imagine how this will affect your own site's users.
• Make sure your choice is a professional web design company. Before you 'hire' a family member, friend, or other amateur to care for your website, find out if they are capable of delivering the kind of site that won't embarrass you or your business.
• Make sure the designer knows how to hand code a site. While using a program like Dreamweaver isn't a problem, a designer who can't put together a site without it is not going to be able to handle the problems that sometimes arise. They should also be using CSS (cascading style sheets) for layout in your site.
• Make sure your designer is aware of security for your website. There are simple things that every site should have that are still overlooked, even by professional firms. Making sure, for example, that every folder on the site has an index.html page in it is important.
These are just a few considerations that should be taken into account.
A. Take into consideration the following:
• What are the demographics you are trying to reach? Younger users will more likely use mobile devices, while older users will most likely use desktops or laptops, and your site must be designed for these devices. Older users will most likely need larger fonts used on the site, younger users will need a different approach to grab their interest. It's important to know who you are trying to reach. Try to limit things down to the most important group, if your demographics are wide.
• Prepare your content, think through the pages you want to have, and what you want to say on each one. This kind of preparation will save a lot of time.
• Find 2-3 websites that you like, then decide what it is you like and about them specifically, as well as what you don't like. The latter is just as important as the former, and this kind of preparation helps a designer tremendously in creating the design for your site.
