Introduction: Ever since I was a kid, I've always had an attraction to the image, whether moving or still. I vividly remember being 8 years old and going to the movies to see a children's film and sneaking in to see the Godfather instead. I was enthralled not only by the acting and story, but more so by the poetry of the images and the color palette of the film. Maybe growing up with a Rolleiflex and a Model One SX-70 Polaroid at home had a little something to do with it as well. I don't really know, but in retrospect, love for the image and all things creative is why I do what I do. Over the years, I've been lucky to work on some very cool video- and photography-related projects with some pretty amazing people. All this work has really helped me grow and learn from some of the very best in the business. In 2008, after three college majors and a successful broadcast career, on a nudge from my wife and some close friends, I launched a boutique studio to continue working on and developing projects and ideas. [ r2:studios ] is that platform, where we focus on photography, new media, and video and film production for multiple distribution platforms. Some of our past and present clients include MTV2, Adidas, UNIQLO, Intel, Hawaiian Airlines, MTV, Sony Music, Scholastic, Verizon, Time Life, Vox Profero, HBO, Teen People, Brand Jordan, Russell Simmons, Motown Records, the NBA and New Era. I really enjoyed working with Rafael. He was very good at listening to our preferences and at capturing the small moments that really made our event. His photos were beautiful--both the portraits and the candid shots. And, though I wouldn't have expected it, we really loved the mix of color and B/W pictures. Everyone enjoyed his presence at our anniversary party and appreciated the chance to have professional pictures taken of their family groupings. He made a CD for us as well as an electronic link so that we could share with our friends and family. All in all, great experience with a great guy.

I've had the pleasure of working with Rafael (R2 Studios) on numerous projects over the last several years . He is equipped with a very versatile skill set that has enabled him to shoot both still photography and digital video in varied settings such as large scale live television events, award show red carpets and music video sets over the years. He is a great collaborator with a distinct eye for detail and an enthusiastic creative energy that is unmatched. I could not be more pleased with his level of professionalism and attention to detail on each shoot from prep through post production. One snowy, rainy day just before the Thanksgiving holiday, Rafael drove all the way from NJ to shoot with my husband and I in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. I was so impressed with his "guerrilla-style" attitude as we shot at a popular hotel. Rafael was prepared with professional equipment, a can-do attitude, and knocked out some incredible headshots that have given my husband and I lots of attention to casting directors and agents. We booked lots of work since then. Thank you Rafael, your photos are amazing!

FAQs

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My general rate for shooting photography is $250 an hour. With this you get me, my creative eye along with my knowledge of shooting plus my pro equipment and lighting. Sometimes, if it's a project I really want to do, I can be somewhat flexible with my rate. With that said, don’t be afraid of reaching out. At the end of the day while $$$ is important, meeting people and shooting creative work is what is most important to me as long as I can make enough to keep the lights on ;)
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm always researching and going to trade shows. I also try to take one class every year whether it's food lighting, Photoshop or a Lightroom class. I feel like there is always something to learn.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Since I was a kid, I've always wanted to be a photographer . Unfortunately my dad didn't think that being a professional photographer was a real career. So I took and detour and worked in television on the creative side after college for some time before coming full circle and doing what I was always meant to do.
