I offer in-your-home private dog training lessons in Burlington, Ocean, Camden and Atlantic Counties in NJ. I also teach basic obedience classes and puppy kindergarten classes at Tabernacle Bed and Biscuit in Tabernacle, NJ.

Furthermore, I teach fun K9 nose work classes at Tabernacle Bed and Biscuit and at Clever K9 in Lakewood, NJ.

My methods are dog friendly and family friendly. "Wouldn't it be nice if your dog would do it because he wanted to, not because you forced him to?"

P.S. Click the video's tab to watch the two puppy videos, "Teaching Puppies Self Control" and "Learning about Puppy Testing". I produced these 5-minute videos, featuring golden retriever puppies for MIND TV in Philadelphia.

I would highly recommend Martha's training to anyone! She has helped owners train almost every breed/mix one could imagine. Her methods are positive, and most of them are "fun" as well.

My Dobermans are trained in AKC obedience venues........when I run into a "roadblock" like getting my dobe to take a metal scent article..."Ugh Mom, it feels funny in my mouth!" Martha comes up with unique ideas...like tieing a bit of fabric around the dowel...Yes, it works!

Martha has helped me train obedience, rally, tracking and some fun "search" work that Dillon loves!!!!

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Talk to the dog trainer you are interested in hiring to determine their dog training philosophy and methods. Make sure that they do not use domineering or corrective methods and that their training is dog-friendly and family-friendly. It's also a good idea to determine their level of experience working with dog training cases such as yours - for example, are they experienced with teaching basic obedience only? Do they have experience working with behavior problems? or are you looking for a dog sport competition trainer? These types of training require different skill sets and experience. Finally, it's a good idea to get references or to have the trainer's name given to you as a referral from your veterinarian or local pet food supply store.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. There are various dog training methods and it matters what method your trainer uses - if harsh methods are used, the dog's behavior may be improved at the expense of changing the dog's demeanor and breaking his spirit. An experienced dog-friendly trainer will know how to solve behavior problems without destroying the relationship between dog and owner. There is a professional dog training organization called Association of Professional Dog Trainers that encourages trainers to learn to train using positive reinforcement methods. The organization offers education programs for their members so they can stay up-to-date on training and behavior-changing methods. Their web site APDT.com includes a trainer search that can be used to find a trainer in your area.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Ask what type of training they offer. Basic obedience? Behavior problem solving? Competition training?
Ask about the methods they use. Do they use positive reinforcement methods? What type of corrections do they use? What type of training aids - leashes, collars, etc do they use? Do they use electronic training? (if so, this type of training is corrective, based either on positive punishment or negative reinforcement).
Ask for references and ask if any veterinarian, rescue, shelter or pet supply store refers them.
Ask which professional organizations they belong to.
Ask if they have any dog training certifications - for example, CPDT-KA is Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed - it is a certification by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. Dog trainers must pass an exam and earn continuing education points to have this certification.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. What behaviors and training they are interested in working on with the trainer. Details about any behavior problems they need to work on.
