    I worked with Cindy for several years, and I credit her encouragement, insight, and faith in me with eventually completing my memoir. She helped me get started and especially to believe in myself and keep writing when I was overwhelmed and tempted to give up. She was also invaluable in guiding both me and my husband with writing our proposals, query letters, and coaching us on the publishing process. I did get a publisher to pick up my book and have been getting very positive reviews, and if Cindy hadn't been with me as a mentor and guide during those early years, I don't know if I could have done it.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask lots of questions about how the writing coach/editor works, what the writing coaching relationship is like, and what you can expect from the person.

Get as clear as possible in advance about what sort of writing help would be most helpful, and if you aren't sure, ask the writing coach to help you figure that out in your first conversation.

Do not commit to a long contract until you are confident the provider is skilled and works well with you.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Several secrets: --There is nothing wrong with you if writing is anxiety producing and difficult, especially if you haven't had much experience. It is for most writers.

Many people who think they can't write simply haven't gotten crystal clear about what they want to write. Clarifying your ideas is difficult to do alone.

All those impressive books at the book stores? Their authors had the same problems you're having, at some point. And they got help solving them.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How much experience have you had helping writers? What types of books have you worked on?
What genres of writing are you most experienced with?
How do you view the relationship with your clients? What do you think is your responsibility in the relationship?
What are your policies about answering questions between sessions, cancellation of sessions, payments?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. What sort of help they want;
What they hope to achieve by writing their book/article;
Who the audience for their book/article is;
How much writing experience they have had;
How they learn most easily;
What qualities in a professional relationship bring out their best.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. With more than 25 years' experience working with writers, I know how to solve every sort of stumbling block writers can face, based on each client's personality.
I understand the psychology of writing, and the importance of the relationship between the writer and coach/editor. I am convinced that trust, respect, and a collaborative relationship between me and my clients is the surest way to help them gain confidence as writers and solve writing problems.
