I offer illustrations of people in brush line, or line and color, done in Adobe Illustrator.

My background in soft martial arts helped in my work for New Harbinger Publications: three books of qigong and yoga. Editor Troy Dufresne says, "Lynn's deft touch to make the books come to life. She renders even complicated images with elegant and economical lines that are a real joy with which to design. "

Many years of doing layout renderings made me quick, so I can do economical drawings on a short deadline. I've been doing large number of color spots for the Oxford Picture Dictionary and related teacher resources. The editor at Oxford asks the agency for me by name.

I've commissioned Lynn to do a few jobs over the last couple of years. Publishing mainly simple, mostly text self-help books, my company finds illustrations to be very challenging. They cost a lot, and they generally more back-and-forth between our authors and an illustrator than we would like or have time to supervise. By working with Lynn, we get a great value: our authors take simple, no-frills photos (as in, there's no way we'll EVER print these!) of the positions and gestures they want to explain, and Lynn transforms them into striking line art. The gestural information the author wants to convey is almost never in doubt (I can only think of one out of literally dozens of illustrations that has required even a second pass), Lynn can turn around work quickly. The work ended up costing us a fraction of what from-scratch illustrations would cost, yet it's orders of magnitude more impressive that what you might get by applying a filter to the photo directly. I recommend Lynn without reservation.

Lynn has done jobs for me with some very tight deadlines and budgets, and she has always pulled it off with beautiful artwork!

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. There are several file formats in which your custom digital illustrations can be sent to you.

If you want to insert your drawings as pictures into Microsoft Word, (if you don't have Adobe Illustrator and a Mac), then you'll need to receive your drawings as pdf files. No problem.

If you're going to use your drawings on the web, I can provide jpegs or png files. You can specify the size in pixels. Easy.

If you're going to have me assemble your captions and drawings in pages, then what you'll receive is a multi-page pdf file. Or you can have each page a separate pdf. No problem. (I'll quote a per-page price for layout.)

If you are a professional graphic designer, you can specify how you need the files. I work in CS2 on a Mac.

I do these drawings in Adobe Illustrator with a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet. The file produced has no size/resolution limits. It's a vector file (it's pure math). You could take your pdf files to a printer and make huge posters and the lines would still be smooth.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Illustration is not 'just tracing'. Really good photos of people yield the best line drawings, because the information is about a specific person in a specific pose. If we make it up, it looks more like a cartoon. However, head transplants are entirely possible.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Give an illustrator a budget per drawing and she can tailor the level of detail to the amount. Or show the illustrator a sample of the kind of work you're looking for and ask for a quote per drawing. It's reasonable to request a small sample to see if she can do exactly the style you're looking for, but it's rude to ask for much free work.

There are a zillion authors of children's books hoping to get their work illustrated on spec, for a share of the royalties. Please don't ask me.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. How are the drawings going to be used – in print (how large) – on the web?

Do you have all the reference ready? You can provide photos that are just thumbnails from stock photography sites, or you can shoot digital photos of a friend posing.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. "She has a particular talent for capturing the gestures that are so important to yoga and qigong images.

And all of this aptitude is tempered with a high degree of professionalism and a commitment to schedule that is almost frightening.

I recommend Lynn without reservation."

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love drawing for professional clients with a definite budget and a clear deadline. I'm a professional illustrator, not a flaky artiste and I love making my clients happy. I get to work in my home in the bush and deal with people around the world.
