- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I always loved taking photos. When my children were born I started taking tons of pictures and looking up techniques for better photos in magazines. People started asking me to take pictures of their families too. I never thought about becoming a professional photographer until I kept getting requests from people to photograph their weddings and a few child portraits. I started taking courses in photography to become more confident in building my knowledge base. There is a lot more to photography than point and shoot. It is a lot of pressure photographing a wedding because there are no "do overs" so I have to really plan and make sure everything I bring works and I have backups. When I started going pro I found it is hard work, but it is so much fun it doesn't feel like work to me.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Always remember; When the party is over, the cake is gone, the flowers have wilted, the dress is in the storage box; as the months, years and decades go by, all you will have are photographs to bring back your emotional moments. Don't skimp on the one thing that will last for generations. Spend less for everything else and hire a good photographer. Find one that reflects the style you had in mind and treats your memories as if they were their own.
