Upon deciding to remodel my bathroom, I scheduled a total of 4 estimates. Charlie Mayerhofer of Perfection Construction arrived first and in retrospect, I should have canceled the other estimates. Being a single female who wanted to appear like she had some idea of what was going on; I had every intention to pretend that I understood the remodel process. I was totally going to nod emphatically and make verbal noises to express my comprehension. With Charlie, this was not necessary; he made sure that I understood. He took extensive measurements, wrote an itemized estimate, and explained how the entire process worked. The three estimates from other contractors afterward were awful. Not one took measurements, two sent an estimate later which felt shady, and one just disappeared.

Charlie did a magnificent job. I didn’t get a new bathroom; I got a spa-room. It is incredible. The tile work is intricate and beautiful, the installation of furniture is perfect, and his attention to detail is unparalleled.

I strongly recommend Charlie Mayerhofer who will assist you in creating a space of beauty and strength.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Tile work, carpentry, masonry, stairs, decks, waterproofing, kitchens and bathrooms.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. It's always advisable to do some research; call prior customers and ask for some feedback. Also, get a free estimate and understand what he will be getting. I'm also advising all customers to only give progress payments either weekly or bi-weekly.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. How to tell a good one from one that only looks good.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Below are the important information should buyers have before seeking me out:

1) their budget
2) job/project completion date
3) hours of work

I always examine the existing conditions before giving my proposal.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Accuracy and quality; I have 40 yrs in the construction field and have worked on numerous landmarks in NY, NJ, and CT. I've completed over $50,000,000.00.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The transformation of before and after, the transformation of an idea or vision into reality. The beauty of watching it all come together.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Are you sure? Yes, I'm very sure! (with a genuine smile)

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. Yes. I was building a deck in Trumbull, CT in 1987 (I was 29 yrs old at that time). The town inspector had come. It was a three-level deck with planters coming down the stairs sliding doors under the mid-level, self closing gates. The deck was sanded like oak flooring, with a clear sealer. It was divided equally and symmetrically with the decking cut on 45-degree angles and laid out into diagonal sections, and sections laid out into diamond patterns with an Olympic size pool in the middle. It took 6 weeks to build $23,000.00 in lumber and 40 cubic yards of concrete just for the post footings. Anyway, the inspector from Trumbull,CT had been there all morning checking everything out and going thru the digs and comparing them to the actual deck he was talking to me, asking me some questions about the conc. mix design and p.s.i and so on, he went in and met with the owner and left. About two hours later, the inspector came back so I told one of my men to go call the owner, Frank and told him the inspectors back with 2 other guys. Frank came running out and asked "What's the matter? Why are you back here? The inspector responded "Oh, hi!". "To the contrary, nothing's wrong at all. I have brought my two colleages to see your deck because it's the most beautiful and well-built deck I've ever seen in my life." Frank smiled and chuckled! About a year later, Frank came up to me and said "You, Charlie, I knew the deck was beatiful but all winter long we had mountains of snow pilied on my deck. I was quite concerned! But when all the snow melted and the ground thawed, I ran out on the deck and checked all around with my level and it was perfectly level still after all that snow, that's when I knew you really built me a great deck!"

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. So many are afraid of being cheated and lied to. They have been burnt in the past by con artists. I want them to see and feel confident that we are a company that is trust worthy, honest and hardworking all the time.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I loved it! I went to work with my brother every summer and on weekends during school. I've always loved working with my hands. I knew from a young age that construction was my calling in life.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I'm super proud of the gas fireplace with tiled walls and floor, and granite top that I made for a nice client. He was very delighted as the gas fireplace and granite top are both efficient and beautiful.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I subscribe to architects digest handyman magazine and log homes, and always check the newest manufacturers literature. I also read blue prints and specifications all the time and they are quite informative as to the newest trends in the industry. I am also taking courses online for high-end construction mgmt and project mgmt put out by Villa Nova University.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. I'm leaning towards alternate sources of energy in my own property that I'm in the process of clearing right now. It's long overdue. I believe that wind, solar, turbines are definitely the future. It's the right time to prepare and do what needs to be done for a better life in the future.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. We are presently starting a contract with the Town of Wallingford, CT installing tile (quarry tile) at their Water Pollution Plants Administration building. We are almost finished with a custom bathroom in Kew Gardens Queens. It's going to be very special! We'll take some pictures for everyone to see soon!

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. I don't have any complicated pricing system for my service. I offer free estimates, and my clients can really tell based on the effort and materials we used that the quality we give is seriously awesome. (T&M)

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Go to college and do his best to become an architect or engineer someday. And once he already achieved it, love his work and be more passionate of what he's doing-- to wholeheartedly service his clients.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Why do you call yourself "Perfection Construction"? It's because we fired the last guy who said that's close enough! It's the standard, old world craftsmanship.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Should you wait when you have a water problem? Unfortunately, the answer is no. The water weakens your structure, rusts your nails and screws and can cause serious health issues if mold and funguses begin to grow.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Are extension cords alright to use for permanent appliances? Not really; they usually are not the proper gauge wires for an item that draws a lot of amps of electricity, and they can get damaged or cut easily by heavy or sharp objects.
