About
Drum Lessons with Rob Garcia. I teach at my studio in the West Midwood/Ditmas Park section of Brooklyn (near Newkirk Plaza and Ave H). I teach my students to play the music they like. I encourage self-expression and creativity as well as learning the necessary skills to read and play music with other people. I am currently accepting students aged 8 years and up. My teaching studio is equipped with two drum sets, piano (I often play piano with the student on drums) and a stereo system. I'm well versed in many popular and not so popular styles of music/drumming (rock, pop, jazz, funk, hip-hop, reggae, Latin, Brazilian, swing, dixieland, drum and bass, to name a few). Bio: Rob Garcia has been teaching drum students and working as a professional performing musician for 30 years. He has taught drums as well as jazz and percussion ensemble at the New York Jazz Workshop, New York Hot Jazz Camp, Brooklyn College Prep Center, Poly Prep Country Day School, Berkeley-Carroll School, P.S. 184, P.S. 10 among others. He has done clinics in the U.S. and Europe and has performed in over one hundred school assemblies in the tristate area with organizations such as Arts Horizons, Arts Connection and the Brooklyn Arts Council. Hailed as “a prime mover in the current Brooklyn jazz scene” (Time Out New York) and “one of New York’s great jazz drummers and composers” (Capital New York), Rob Garcia has established himself as a vital force in contemporary jazz. As both sideman and bandleader, he brings deep musicality and creative vision to every project. Rob has collaborated with an impressive range of artists, including Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Dave Liebman, David Byrne, Wynton Marsalis, the Kronos Quartet, Diana Krall, Myra Melford, Joseph Jarman, Catherine Russell, Kris Davis, Nicole Zuraitis, Anat Cohen, Vince Giordano, Reggie Workman, Wycliffe Gordon, and Ghost Train Orchestra. Garcia has appeared on more than 75 recordings—including Grammy-winning albums—and has toured worldwide. As a bandleader and co-leader, Rob has released 17 critically acclaimed albums featuring luminaries such as Joe Lovano, Noah Preminger, Kate McGarry, Leo Genovese, Dan Tepfer, Gary Versace, and Mike Formanek. His work has earned consistent recognition from DownBeat, The New York Times, JazzTimes, and Time Out New York, with multiple albums landing on year-end “best of” lists. Recent releases as a leader include “Sizzle Ensemble” (2026) on Connection Works Records, “Natural Bounce” (2023) and “Illumination” (2020) on Fresh Sound Records. His 2018 solo drum set album Drum Solos For Dancers Only showcases his inventive approach to rhythm and improvisation. Rob’s groups have performed at premier venues and festivals including the Ottawa, Toronto, and Kingston Jazz Festivals, Birdland, Iridium, Smalls, and Firehouse 12. His work has been supported by grants from South Arts, Meet The Composer, DCA, and NYSCA. He is a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. Beyond performing, Rob is a committed advocate for artist-run jazz organizations. He founded and co-directs Connection Works (501c3) and is a member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground, helping to build sustainable pathways for jazz to flourish in the 21st century.

Rob is a very patient, informative drum teacher, focused on learning to play music (the FUN part of learning to play drums!). He also teaches how to develop more technical aspects of drumming. I highly suggest Rob if you are just starting out or need to brush up on skills!

My son takes drum lessons from Rob and I can't recommend him enough. He is a professional drummer and a professional teacher who has inspired my son to play and practice! Aside from being a patient, engaging and very talented teacher, he has the unique ability to make drum lessons both fun and productive.

Rob has been teaching our 7 year old son for 8 months. My son is more interested in playing songs rather than learning to read music. So Rob customizes his lessons in such a way that they write and performs a song together in each class. Rob then writes a beat from the newly created song in musical notes and shares it with my son so that he's learning make music, and how to read music as well. Rob is also great at taking my son's lead. Sometimes my son just wants to spend time experimenting with the many different percussion instruments Rob has in his studio. We are very happy and would highly recommend Rob.

Rob has taught my teenage son to play multiple styles, read music, and enjoy going to lessons over the last two years. Rob not only models the drums, but often accompanies my son on piano which makes for a much more lively session, and teaches the give and take of playing with other musicians.
