I perform all forms of editing, specializing in children's books, from project editing of a book from start to finish, through developmental editing (editing for structure, style, and content), manuscript evaluation and critique, rewriting, to line-editing (editing at the sentence level); associated researching and writing tasks, including copywriting.
I have worked in children's publishing for over 20 years, in fiction, nonfiction, and all age groups, and am the author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Children's Books.
I do not copyedit or proofread. I work with both authors and publishers, and provide strict confidentiality.
Question and answer
Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. My most common projects are critiques of children's book manuscripts, from picture books to novels. For a critique, I read the manuscript and take notes. If I see sentence-level problems I may comment on the manuscript itself; otherwise I discuss the problems I have found in an "editorial letter"--similar to what I would write to an author I was working with in an in-house setting.
