I received my MFA from Columbia University and was a college professor for ten years, teaching grammar, English literature, composition and critical thinking. My specialty was teaching how to write for standardized tests, and my score improvements for my students were always top-notch.
Teaching was always a joy for me, from my very first day in the classroom. And then I discovered that my greatest passion as a teacher is test preparation.
I've written my own manual, "Secrets from the Vault of an SAT Geek" to help my students achieve improvements of up to 800 points. (Yes, really! Not typical, but it has happened.) More typically, I see improvements of around 300 points.
I prepare students for all kinds of standardized tests, from the SAT to the GRE to the LSAT. I offer classes and private sessions.
I have an office in the heart of Park Slope, near the 7th Avenue F Train.
Please contact me, and let's discuss ways that I might be able to help your child improve her or his score with!
Question and answer
Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. I mostly do SAT prep. I also do College Essay work and LSAT preparation.
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. I would ask them to watch how the kid feels after tutoring. Try to find a tutor who doesn't make your kid tense or stressed, because that will only compound problems on test day!
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I love standardized tests! To me, they are like crossword puzzles or Suduko (to other people....ironically, I hate crossword puzzles). I love hacking my way through a really tricky LSAT problem or Math problem.
I'm passionate about helping teenagers. I had a rough time in high school (possibly because I love standardized test prep?). I was confused and disorganized and late late late. I turned it around for myself in college, but I still have enormous empathy for kids who are struggling, and my empathy breeds patience. I love working with teenagers.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. It would be hard for me to say whether I like the kids more or the puzzle like nature of tests more. Some days, I can't wait to get to work because I know how much I'm going to help a kid. Some days, I know I'm going to get to prepare some crazy hard function problems and I look forward to working alone for a few hours. It would be hard to say.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. Do you think you can help? (Panic, fear, worry).
Yes. I think I can help. I love working with kids who have trouble with tests. I understand why they feel the way they do and I know I can change it.
My son/daughter really doesn't want to come to tutoring. Should we still do this?
Yes. Of course your kid doesn't want to come to SAT tutoring! It's SAT tutoring. It's blecky! But I will be on his or her side, and that comfort might actually be enough to get them looking forward to tutoring each week.
