Emily provides elegant harp music for any occasion: weddings, cocktail parties, church services, corporate events, concerts, etc. Trained at the Eastman School of Music, Emily John offers a wide variety of repertoire, from Classical to Jazz, Broadway to Contemporary, New Age to Celtic.

As part of my fee, I offer a private consultation at my apartment so you can hear the harp, select your music and meet with me. As a professional harpist, I have been performing for over 20 years at a wide variety of events, from private functions to large-scale concerts.

Emily provided harp accompaniment for professional recordings of my children's choir. She was fabulous to work with and a top-notch musician. She was always on time, always prepared and lovely to be around. Emily also sings, plays piano and composes. Don't bother looking anywhere else: she'll adapt to any situation and play exactly what you need!

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. I perform for weddings, parties, ceremonies, corporate events as well as concerts, recitals and school demonstrations. I am regularly hired with regional orchestras and choirs but much of my work is solo performance for events.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Weddings: As the daughter of a professional wedding consultant, I am knowledgeable about many aspects of wedding planning and can assist in choosing music and shaping your ceremony.

Events: Having performed for corporate events such as the Brooks Brothers Winter Fashion Show, Samsung Corporate Roadshow, NYRR VIP Marathon Reception, and Barneys of New York, I am comfortable in corporate settings, providing elegant background music for any function.

Concerts: I regularly perform with regional orchestras, choirs and for church services as well as provide recitals and school programs.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love bringing joy to people through music and I love seeing different facets of life and being part of events. I also love surprising people with what the harp can do; I play jazz, contemporary hits as well as Classical music and I love connecting with people through music.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Is the harp loud enough? Answer: the harp, as a solo instrument is surprisingly loud and has a different timbre than the human voice, so it works well in cocktail events, weddings etc.

What's your rate? Answer: I provide a rate quote for events if I am available for your date. If I am not available I can recommend other harpists. My rates are competitive and in alignment with other professional musicians.

Are your rates negotiable? Answer: not very much because I respect the other musicians in the area and we all have similar rates. I will not get into a bidding war.

How do you move the harp? Answer: I have a large car, a very supportive husband and a dolly that is specially designed for the harp. The rate includes my transportation and setup. If there are stairs, I will need assistance but otherwise I am self-sufficient in transporting the harp.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I have been involved in music for my entire life; my mother and grandmother are both musicians, so I grew up in a musical household. I love sharing music with people, and being a part of their events. I am now married to a conductor, so my musical family has grown!
