Introduction: Hi! I'm Katherine, a freelance editor & creative writing coach. I provide skilled assistance with personal statements, college application essays, web content, social media, and other creative writing work. With a naturally warm, energetic, and positive personality, I am at my best when working in environment where I have the responsibility to provide support, mentorship, and inspiration to others. I love working with students from elementary school through high school, as well as those pursuing their college studies and beyond. I have a wide array of academic, artistic, and career experience to draw upon in order to provide assistance with schoolwork, encourage each individual’s talents and interests, and best serve the goals of the person I am working with. I am a 2010 graduate of Wesleyan University with a Bachelor's degree in English. From 2010-2011, I completed a Graduate Fellowship in Wesleyan's Writing Program with coursework in creative writing and studio art. At Wesleyan, I held a two-year position with the University Dean’s Office as a peer adviser, providing academic mentorship as students navigated their college careers. I’ve been formally trained as a writing tutor through the University’s Writing Programs, and have worked with students ranging from English Language Learners (ESL students) to those preparing their graduate theses. During my Graduate Fellowship, I worked at the University's Writing Resource Center as well as organized creative writing programming for undergraduate students. My personal philosophy is to always be learning something new, work with integrity, and have fun with the pursuit of health, happiness, and a meaningful life. My passion for writing is both a creative outlet and an invaluable skill. While at Wesleyan, I was awarded a competitive undergraduate journalism grant to work with a poverty alleviation program in the capital city of Dhaka, Bangladesh. This experience was an intensive immersion and invaluable educational experience to learn about the functioning of an effective grassroots NGO providing holistic and comprehensive support to citizens of Bangladesh living in extreme poverty. Later, my writing expertise was a key asset in working with a start-up nonprofit focused on girls education in Kenya. As the team's only US-based staff member, my support helped build their operations from scratch to an organization with a two million dollar operating budget and an impact of deep measure in only a few years. My personal writing practice is a daily one, and I am usually inspired to write within the forms of creative nonfiction or the personal essay. Tutoring in any capacity requires deep listening skills and an encouraging demeanor in order to effectively respond to the needs at hand. It is important to keep an open mind and understanding approach in order to best serve each person's particular concerns and interests. These responsibilities are ones that excite and interest me; I look forward to sharing my love of learning and providing a solid presence of support if given the opportunity to work with you!
