The Hot Mess, and their dynamic leader Jessy Carolina, bring songs of the jazz age to life like no other contemporary group. There is no self-conscious academia in their sound, and not a scrap of digital-era aloofness. Carolina's robust performances seem to posess not only her bandmates and the audience, but the songs themselves. Through her prowess, the most overplayed old standards seem to leap from the stage and grab the listener by the throat.
