Introduction: I have been in publishing for forty years, edited over 20 New York Times best sellers, and served as the executive for three major houses. Wrote seven works of nonfiction and fiction including an Edgar nominee. I have a wide acquaintance in the agent community. Once your book is ready for submission I can recommend your work to over 100 agents and agencies
with whom I worked over the years.
I am a hands-on editor and would, where and when appropriate, offer specific constructive comments, written on the MS itself along with an editorial letter. They would range from meticulous line editing to structure, character development, plot, winnowing or expansion of the material, that is all aspects of the work.
I would respond to your literary or commercial novel, memoir or work of nonfiction, not just as a freelance editor but as a publisher who intended to publish your book, which means I would be direct and forthright.
I believe good editing is a partnership with the author where we are both committed to the work itself which allows the author and editor to speak honestly and candidly to each other.

Over a three month period, Mr. Black assisted in winnowing a 600 page commercial novel to a lean 380 pages. He focused the main story, built the pace, and highlighted the main themes and characters. What was most impressive was his ability to shape and pace the story. In short, he took a turkey and deftly carved it which enabled the writer to present a beautiful platter. He is absolutely brilliant. Full value received. It is so easy to get lost in your own MS to have someone like Mr. Black is priceless. He is frank in both praise and criticism and won't waste your time. Living in Los Angeles I was nervous to work with someone from the East Coast but it worked out fine. He is accessible, responsive and worth diamonds.

I hired Mr. Black to provide editing services for my book. Although I am not one of his best selling authors, I was very pleased with the insightful help he gave me. After I decided to hire, he never responded. Disappointed. The only reason I gave 3 stars as opposed to 1 is because I am not sure of the circumstance. But some sort of response would have been appreciated.
