Introduction: I worked for Kirkus Reviews for over 20 years, evaluating new fiction 2-3 months prior to publication. I also copy edited and proofed the magazine before and after publication. Prior to that, I spent seven years as an editor in Redbook magazine's fiction department. Since that time, I have served on PEN's Prison Writing Program, primarily as a judge during their annual prize-winning contest.
