My wife and I work together on compositions. Maximo, who has now moved to New York, guided us through our, so far, most ambitious piece, an octet, which we hope to get recorded professionally in early 2016. Maximo is a very supportive, enthusiastic and helpful counsellor, who has the benefit, not only of extensive training at Juilliard, but also of having had his compositions played by important orchestras. He has a knack of pointing out areas of possible improvement, and passages that don't work, in the most charming and un-confrontational way. He nudged us towards a more modern sound and introduced us to specific techniques that made the piece less predictable, while showing respect for our musical taste and decisions. He is a pleasure to work with. Robert and Martha Hanrott Washington DC

Mr. Flugelman and I have been working together since the summer, and I have already completed one part of a classical piano piece that I’m very proud of. It’s difficult to describe his style of teaching in a pithy statement, but overall, I’d say he’s very focused on the “big picture” more so than on the mechanics of music theory. For example, instead of focusing on my written scores (which are always problematic given that I’m only in the intro phase of music theory), he prefers to listen to my ideas several times over before making suggestions. And that’s really what makes him a great teacher--that he listens, very very carefully. Indeed, every lesson presents itself with different challenges; sometimes I have nearly finished ideas, sometimes partial ones, and sometimes, when I’m really struggling, only vague fragments here and there. Yet even in the most extreme cases, he listens to what I have, what I’ve discarded, what I think my vision is, etc. etc…. and somehow, he always manages to help me put the pieces together without being too overbearing. Upon reflection, I can only attribute such unusual resourcefulness and flexibility to exceptionally good listening skills. Mr. Flugelman also deserves props for being a great stylist; he really does have a beautiful sense for what “works” and what doesn’t, and it’s always a pleasure to hear his musical ideas in the rare occasion when he shares them. Bottom line: if you work with him, you’ll be in good “ears”.
