Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: My approach is unique is that it combines not only training muscle coordinations but also training your mind to release it's hold on your progress, your fears and perspective. My mantra is "Free Your Mind, Free Your Voice". I love watching and hearing a singer grow with their voice. Seeing their confidence build and their skills improve. A lot of NYC coaches of my prominence do not work with beginners, but I find helping singers just starting on the path the most rewarding.

I have been to many vocal coaches in my time, including some who have made themselves famous as "the vocal coach for...(so and so)". In my experience Kevin Richards was more helpful than all of them. His dedication to the understanding of the human body and vocalizing process is impressive, but more impressive still, is his ability to communicate his knowledge to his students. Where other (very highly sought) vocal coaches have told me "no, not quite like that...um...well...try again", Kevin is able to say "ok, I can see what you're doing wrong, you're pulling these muscles here, you need to do "this" and it should feel like "this". In other words, while those other vocal coaches may have the knowledge, they were not able to pinpoint my problems and/or explain to me how to correct them nearly as clearly or quickly as Kevin could. During our lesson there were a lot of "Ohhh! That's what those other guys were trying to tell me?!!" breakthrough moments for me - some on the first day. That was the real difference. Kevin brought me further in 3 months, than all the combined years spent with other coaches. My overall range is bigger and the strength of my voice on the outside fringes of my range has greatly increased . -noticeable to all who hear me sing on a regular basis. I now also own his book and his home study program "Breaking the Chains". Again, I've bought dozens of books, videos, and audio programs over the years. Kevin's is simultaneously the most thorough, and the easiest to understand. I've already argued with other friends in NYC bands to try to keep them from making a mistake. If you are in the NYC area, you have access to dozens of "celebrity" vocal coaches who are willing to take two days worth of table waiting wages off aspiring stars for an hour of their time. No offense to the other coaches I've met- many of them were very nice people and fairly helpful instructors, but shop around, and when you do, give Kevin Richards a try before immediately jumping on the bandwagon of one of the others. I can almost guarantee who you will chose. Kevin has had the famous clients that he could tout in front of you. He could be trying to make himself famous. He could be charging ridiculous rates. He doesn't. He's passionate about voice, he's fair and ethical, and he has a real desire to help people and to be accessible to those who really need his help - not just the rich and famous or desperately ambitious... In my experience, he also produces much better results.

I have been taking weekly in-person lessons with Kevin for a few months and have made excellent progress with my vocal abilities. We practices a different array of exercises; Kevin explains the purpose of each one and why they're important to do. He understands that singing songs is the ultimate goal, so at about the 4th lesson we were already practicing singing a song my choice. I have sent him sound files of myself practicing via email and he provided helpful feedback, an important sign of a coach wanting to help his student and see them succeed, going beyond the weekly lesson. Kevin has helped me grow and develop my voice tremendously. I highly recommend anyone who is in the NYC area or has Skype (online lessons are available) to inquire about vocal lessons with Kevin and RPM Vocal Studios.

As a vocal coach myself, I can tell you that there are truly only a handful of voice coaches out there that stand out as having the professional experience as a vocalist, the scientific knowledge of the voice, and the years of teaching experience under their belt that would distinguish them as a world class teacher of voice. Kevin Richards is one of those special people. I am more than happy to give him my highest recommendation.

Thanks so much Shaun - coming from such a prolific singer and coach as yourself that means a lot.

I spent my whole life thinking I had a bad voice, but I still desperately wanted to sing and front a hard rock band. Once I got out of my own way, I found I did have a voice that needed direction. Kevin made it possible for me. I went from a guy who sounded decent at karaoke to being the lead singer of a band, produced by one of my favorite major label artists! Kevin will teach you- 1) Where sound really comes from 2) How to breathe 3) How to de-mystify the things you think you can't accomplish 4) How practice makes permanent, not perfect. Practice the right way! \m/ DO it!

Thanks Vic. Great review – with bullet points! I am so glad I was able to help in some way in your musical journey. I can remember you first coming to me just dreaming about singing for a band, and here you are with a release produced by one of your music heroes. Amazing progress. All my hope and dreams for your new family too!

I went to Kevin to try -- JUST try -- and see if I could hold a note. And if such a note could be held, could it be a powerful, steady, bad ass note? Kevin was amazingly able to get this out of me in just a few weeks. He is patient but totally focused. The man has a plan! I'd also like to say he is clearly an amazing asset for professionals but if you're like me and just want to karaoke better, Kevin is perfect, too -- don't be intimidated. I worked hard in those lessons, but I always had a good time -- he has great stories about his experiences. Go rock it, people...give Kevin a call!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am constantly learning from other coaches, reading the latest research in voice science and reading books on singing technique dating back to the time of Shakespeare. I'm sort of singing technique historian.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I have been told my whole life that I had a knack for making complex ideas and concepts simple and easy to understand. And although I had taught singing off and on for 15 years I was always working for someone else. When the economy tanked in 2008 I decided I wanted a career where I couldn't be fired. My wife encouraged me to start teaching singing since it was what I loved to do anyway and I was so gifted at teaching others. So here I am.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Advice? Make sure this person does NOT teach a style but technique. It's not a teachers job to tell what style of music to sing, they are their to train you for whatever it is YOU want to do. Also make sure this teacher can answer ANY question about singing technique you throw at them. If they can't answer or say "you don't need to know that", you are dealing with a teacher not well versed in what they are teaching. Make sure they are still actively performing and showing they can do what they teach. Beware of someone with lots of "degrees" but little real world performance experience. They can't possibly relate to a singer who performs or wants to perform.
