I approach a proposed invention conservatively and with a critical eye, so as to better identify those worth pursuing and isolate any scientific inconsistencies. Worthwhile prospects will be pursued in depth. However, if, in my determination, pursuit of a proposed invention is not worthwhile (due, e.g., to perception of: relative cost, lack of inventiveness, narrow scope of protection, limited future commercial success, etc.), I will advise against preparing a patent application, rather than be paid for an application in which I have little faith.
