Introduction: Our mission at Musicworks brings interactive arts education into the lives of creative students. We act locally and globally to engage the artistic potential of those without means and cultivate meaningful relationships between students and professional performers. Above all else, Musicworks practices interaction as a means to creative arts education! What do we do? The Musicworks program brings enthusiastic presentations and performances to students in a variety of settings. Geared to reach musicians and non-musicians alike, programs are carefully structured yet casually presented in a warm and cooperative manner. Rather than focusing on the often overwhelming and intimidating mechanics of musicianship, these workshops demystify the structure and beauty of jazz, world, and improvised music. Teachers and live performers bridge the gap between abstraction and realization of the artistic experience. Where do we work? In the past two years, we have made four volunteer trips to Ecuador and Guatemala, teaching over 200 students in pre-school through college settings and donating supplies and over a dozen instruments. Musicworks currently sponsors two students’ school tuition and has also supported March of Dimes and disaster relief in Japan and Haiti. In New York City, we present workshops at schools and senior citizen centers, hold jam sessions and concerts where students mentor with professional musicians, and offer semester-long scholarship private lessons free of charge. Musicworks has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project and was featured on AOL’s national homepage as a featured cause module charity. Musicworks has 501(c)(3) non-profit status under sponsorship from fractured atlas.
