Introduction: With his instrumental prowess and keen artistic grasp, classical saxophonist Wonki Lee has distinguished himself as a remarkable performer. In 2010, he was the first Korean player ever selected to be one of the 18 semifinalists in the Adolphe Sax International Competition in Belgium. In the United States, Japan, and Korea, Mr. Lee has given recitals and performed a wide range of music including solo premieres and chamber music. He has appeared with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Wind Symphony Orchestra, Ridgewood Concert Band, New World Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, and Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra. He made his Carnegie Weill Recital Hall debut in 2008, and his live recording of the Henri Tomasi Saxophone Concerto was broadcast on WQXR radio. In May 2014, he has appeared as in the final concert of the 25th season of New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble as a featured artist performing Glazunov Saxophone Concerto. He has recently been selected to perform under three acclaimed maestros, as follows: * In February 2013, as winner of the Manhattan School of Music's annual Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition, he performed the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto with conductor Philippe Entremont. * In March 2014, he was invited to perform with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Eiji Oue as they launched their 100th Anniversary World Tour at Alice Tully Hall. * In April 2014, he performed the saxophone solo in Mussorgsky's Pictures at an exhibition in the Ravel/Slatikin arrangement at Carnegie Hall with the MSM Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. Born in 1989 to Korean parents living in Tokyo, Mr. Lee began to study the saxophone at age thirteen and soon moved to New York City where he spent most of his formative years. His principal teacher was Dr. Paul Cohen at the Manhattan School of Music. Among his many prizes and awards are the 1st prize for Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition, 1st prize for MTNA Young Artist New York State Competition, 1st prize for Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition, and 3rd prize for the LISMA International Music Competition.
