I am a licensed marriage family therapist in New York and California. My fifteen years of clinical experience have allowed me to develop comprehensive and effective tools for reducing stress and depression, while increasing experiences of fulfillment and happiness in daily life.
I specialize in treating addictions and caretaking fatigue, obsessions/compulsions, anxiety and panic, social conflict resolution, depression, anger management, gender identity and transition, grief and loss, HIV-related issues, and sexual identity and coming out, all with a sensitivity toward diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds.
I also specialize in helping couples with non-traditional arrangements to have more loving and joyful relationships. My writing brings these elements together in fresh ways in order to challenge and eliminate harmful "shoulds" in my book, Absolutely Should-less.
I started working in the mental health field in 1996 and quickly found that traditional models of psychotherapy failed to meet the complex needs of a diverse society. I realized that culture and politics played significant roles in one's emotional development, and then sought to understand how these factors could be utilized to promote wellness.
Inspired by the works of Albert Ellis, Marianne Williamson, Byron Katie, and Margaret Cho, I developed ideas of how challenging assumed "shoulds" could assist in promoting mental and spiritual health. After years of applying these ideas to myself and to my clients, I decided to write Absolutely Should-less to benefit others and eliminate suffering.
