About Chas Carner

Chas Carner is a writing coach and consultant.

Stop talking and start writing. Novice or seasoned professional, we all find ourselves "stuck" sometimes, getting our ideas out of our heads and onto the page. I can help. I'm a(n):

* Ivy-educated creative writing and film studies graduate
* Multi-award-winning author of novels, short stories and documentaries
* Certified teacher of students, grammar-through-college and adult continuing ed
* Effective editor of other writers' material, guiding them from concept to manuscript to agent to publisher to bookstore shelf
* 35-year freelance professional with credits and connections in most media, including: television sitcoms, soaps and movies; feature and documentary films; long- and short-form fiction; travel books; periodicals and newsletters; essays, journals, reviews, blogs and e-zines

I work one-on-one, in intensive one-hour sessions. I draw upon numerous references and resources, personal and professional experiences, an extensive private library of literature and text books - even my own colleagues and collaborators - to inspire, enrich and facilitate your creative process. Usually, I work from hard copy only; (for your protection as well as mine, please no unsolicited e-ttached manuscripts.) Under special circumstances, long-distance e-mail/phone counseling can be arranged. My Upper Westside Manhattan location is conveniently near 1, 2, 3, B & C subway-, as well as M-5, -86 & -104 bus-, lines.

Google me. Then, if you're interested, call or e-me for a quick intro or consultation, to discuss rates, and to schedule an appointment. I hope to hear from you soon. Keep up the good stuff 'til then!

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Most writers come to me with their manuscripts in various stages of undress. I work with them on story & character development, plot & structure, dialog & action.

Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.

A. 1. Helped former Henry Holt editor to compose/compile/edit/publish her first volume of poetry
2. Helped psychologist/teacher initiate an autobiographical novel, and one based on the personal writings of her students
3. Helped writer restructure/complete her screenplay for short-film production

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. With what types of writers do you work best? Please provide samples and examples of past projects.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Coaching/Consulting keeps me in collaboration mode with others. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction: sharing stories and ideas, solving problems in tandem, teaching and learning at the same time. And, of course, successfully completing a project.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. While still an undergraduate, I switched my major from Biology/Pre-Med to American Literature/Creative Writing/Education. Then, as a graduating senior, I won a prestigious award for one of my short stories, which gave me the confidence to move to New York and pursue my professional writing career.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. A current project is one of my own: Adapting my award-winning young adult novel "Tawny", into a full length feature film.
