Introduction: What sets me apart from other personal trainers is that, as a dancer, I have spent a lifetime studying movement. My dance training has taught me to think creatively and pay attention to areas that traditional exercise programs overlook. Studies in functional anatomy have also made made me adept at analyzing movement patterns. I bring this expert eye to each session to ensure that you get the most effective workout possible. My fitness plans are mindful and fully individualized. I work with you to create a program that is tailored to your goals, likes, dislikes, and medical history. I specialize in corrective exercise techniques to address a wide variety of postural and movement dysfunctions, no matter how new or deeply ingrained they may be. The main components of my approach are strength, cardiorespiratory, flexibility, core, and balance training. Depending on the client I incorporate a wide variety of other equipment and modalities including high intensity interval training, TRX suspension training, kettlebells, plyometrics, and more. I don't believe in fads or false promises – I use only the most effective, science-based methods. Credentials: NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist, NASM Women's Fitness Specialist, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, BA cum laude, Columbia University Sometimes we forget how incredible our bodies are. Just think for a second about how amazing is that your body takes food and air and turns them into energy. That your heart beats and you breathe without even thinking about it. And that you have muscles that can grow and change, and a really powerful brain! It may sound silly, but those simple things are incredible and I like to remind people that their bodies are amazing machines. I also love working with my pre/postnatal clients for that reason. Talk about fast, incredible changes!

Training with Garnet for the last four months has been a wonderful experience! I was looking for a trainer after having my first child and it was proving to be quite a challenge because no one seemed to understand that after delivering a baby even normal walking is a challenge. Thankfully I met Garnet. At our very first meeting she was so thorough in discussing my goals that I knew right away it was going to be a great experience training with her. Garnet's training regime includes concepts of pilates and her immense knowledge of how the human body functions, tremendously helps and makes each exercise worthwhile. Moreover, for a mother of an infant who pretty much has no predictable schedule, Garnet's flexibility in scheduling our sessions set her apart as a trainer in my mind. She always had a smile on her face at every session and her demeanor helped me gain confidence in the way I looked and tackle my rough few months with the baby. It's easy to find a trainer that can help you lift weights and show you how to do bursts of cardio, but finding someone that understands your individual needs, and helps you become not only physical but mentally healthy, is very hard to find. Garnet is such a person and I'm lucky to have found her!

Garnet really helped me when I was having issues with lower-back pain: she showed me some good exercises to practice, and recommended further steps. She was also full of general health advice, ranging from what to keep in mind with regards to food and diet, as well as lifestyle and activity (Thanks to her, I stand rather than sit on the subway a lot more!) I'd definitely recommend her a personal trainer!

I love working with Garnet. She's always on time, very personable and really knows her stuff. I'm never overly sore after our sessions and I've seen results very quickly. Its also very convenient that she will come to my apartment to train me and I always look forward to our sessions. I would totally recommend her to anyone looking for a kind, safe, fun person to train with.

I started working out with Garnet this past Summer once per week with my main goal to lose weight for my wedding this Spring. In the beginning, we started on basics and strength training. Each week I found myself getting stronger and able to do a little bit more. Over the past 10 weeks we've started meeting twice per week and I've started feeling muscles in places that I didn't know existed! My stamina, balance and focus are improved. Garnet is more than knowledgable when it comes to personal training, but she is also professional and realistic with her training goals. She explains each exercise so you understand how to perform it properly but also why it is important. For me, I needed the consistency of someone showing up at my door with no possible way to put exercising off. This is where Garnet has made all the difference. She motivates me to work out on my days off and keeps me honest about my goals. There is no time in my life when I have worked out this consistently for this long. Overall, I can't say enough positive things about her service and highly recommend her to anyone looking to improve their fitness level. I am very glad I found her! Ps. I live in the smallest apartment ever, but she makes it work.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I always begin with a full consultation to learn more about a client's goals, medical history, and exercise habits. It's a vital step for me to design a program that is safe and effective. In the first session, I integrate several movement assessments into the workout to further evaluate clients' strengths and weaknesses, and to make sure we're avoiding any exercises that could lead to injury.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In addition to being a certified personal trainer, I am also a Corrective Exercise Specialist. That additional training makes me an expert at correcting movement dysfunctions, which is something that everyone from high-performance athletes to desk workers need. I'm also certified to work with pre- and postnatal clients.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I've been dancing for my whole life, and that love of movement was what led me to become a personal trainer. Movement is powerful medicine for our bodies, and I want to share that with people.
