Mike and Hillary Stopera each have over 25 years of experience in both obedience training and behavior modification. We offer group or private classes at our facility or in-home sessions in Obedience I, II, and III, Behavior Modification, Therapy Dog Prep also New Baby and the Dog session.
Mike is a certified AKC CGC evaluator and a professional member of IACP. Our methods are based on positive re-enforcement and operant conditioning. Mike and Hillary not only work with clients and their dogs in obedience or correcting unwanted behaviors, but explain to their clients how the dog thinks and learns in order to give owners a better understanding of their dog.
Mike and Hillary understand rescue/shelter dogs and the special needs/problems owners can encounter with these dogs, having three rescues of their own. Basics & Beyond Dog Academy has two trainer/behavior specialists in every class or session, so that every client and their dog gets the individual attention they deserve. We offer discounts for rescue/shelter dogs. Basics & Beyond Dog Academy is veterinarian recommended. Mike and Hillary look forward to working with you and your dog towards that "Good Dog" we know is possible! We serve Cuyahoga, Medina, Summit, Lorain, and Geauga Counties.
A. When it comes to hiring a Dog Trainer don't be afraid to ask alot of questions. Ask about their training methods. Don't think that a "certification" means that they are better at the training than those that aren't certified. Alot of the "certifications" can be obtained over the web or by paying a fee to obtain them. There is no state or national certificate for dog training. Ask about their experience, especially if you are having a specific behavioral problem. Meet with the trainer or observe a class to see if you feel comfortable with not only their methods but the trainer themselves.
A. How old should the dog be to start training and can an older dog be trained? Training can be done at any age, even older dogs. Dogs are capable of learning all through their lives. We feel that training should be started with puppies as soon as their Vet has given them the necessary "puppy shots".
