Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Most of our jobs we work on are residential re-paints. We have worked on small bedrooms and re-paint of large houses with foyers and vaulted ceilings. We work on exterior houses with aluminum, wood and cedar siding. Some of our commercial work includes mall plazas, office buildings and warehouse decking.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. I would recommend the customer to check his portfolio of jobs and make sure they have sufficient experience in the trade. Check to make sure they are insured and are certified by the Epa. I would also research the project I want painted and write down some key questions to ask the painter to make sure he is knowledgeable about his trade.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The most challenging part about painting would be cutting in a ceiling line. The secret to cutting in is a steady hand and enough paint on the brush to make a long continuous line.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. The customer should know what he or she wants painted. They should know for sure what rooms they want painted and if they want ceilings painted or trim. Customers sometimes are uncertain about color selections and that is Ok. We can either help with the selection or get them a free color consultation with a professional designer.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We make sure that the outside surface areas are prepped properly in order to protect the home or building from future weathering and damage. As knowledgeable and professional painting contractors, all of our projects are primed with the best bonding agents to assure proper adhesion. For example, we apply oil based primers for bare wood surfaces where as we would use high bonding and early rust inhibiters for metal surfaces

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. We like helping our customers in transform their house into a home. Making a change in people’s life’s even if it is only a 1 bedroom re-paint or a revamp of the entire house, Optimal Painting can help.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Most customers want to become familiar about the products being used and if your company protects flooring and belongings from paint.
Since we are very knowledgeable in the product lines supplied, we can recommend a variety of products for any given job. We make sure that floors, furniture and personal belongings are protected by plastic wrap and drop cloths.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. On one project we were working late to make sure we completed the job on time and on schedule. The home owner knew we were working hard and she wanted to show her gratitude. She brought the crew home dinner and really appreciated that.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. Most people feel that painting is a trade is easy and not very hard to master.
This is partially true but that can be said about any trade that exists. One has to train for his trade and master the craft so that he or she can get the job done in an efficient way and in a manner the customer will appreciate.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. When I was in high school I needed work and I decided to go out and start a business. I took on painting not knowing a thing about it. I started out on small jobs and took on larger jobs as I became more confident in my skills.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. We recently were working on the interior of a house that was new construction for young family. They were so excited about purchasing their first house and we were happy to add some color in their life. These are the kind of jobs that make it worth wild.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. We are always educating our self’s about new product lines being offered. With the new Epa and regulations man dated for painters, you are required to become certified and knowledgeable about lead paint.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. Paints are evolving all the time. New product lines that have lower voc and are hybrids with a strong structural integrity are interesting. Some paints are claiming that priming agents are not needed and the performance is still as good. I am on the side of caution when it comes to this trade off. Too early in the products life to say it works.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. Most recent project was a foyer with wallpaper removal. We all know that removing wallpaper is not fun and it takes time and patients. We worked on the job for 2 days removing the paper and a 1 day painting the foyer. The job came out great and the customer was happy.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. Our pricing is system is straight forward. We look at the project at hand and calculate material plus labor time. We can arrive at a price the customer will appreciate and we can profit.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Like any investment I would suggest researching the trade. Find out the cons and pros to owning a business or becoming a painter. Learn about the products, equipment and advertising. Like any job you have multiple variable and it is best to know them all.
